Sam’s words were like fire licking blazing stripes across my skin. “Fuck, fuck that was hot. Christ.” Then Sam was grunting his own release, and I stared down at our bare dicks sliding against each other sloppily in his big hand. I gave another shudder of relief and wondered again why this incredible specimen of a man would want to do this with me.

Maybe he was desperate.

I laughed at the ridiculous thought, and then I just kept laughing.

“Not the reaction I was expecting,” Sam said, yanking off his shirt to use as a rag. “But I could listen to you laugh all day for any reason.”

I sighed with contentment. “Just happy, that’s all.”

Sam grinned wide. “Then so am I.”

We went inside and slept curled around each other. It was beginning to feel delightfully familiar, and I vowed not to second-guess how long it was going to last.

I would simply enjoy it regardless.

I awoke the next morning to a handsy octopus determined to make me feel even more amazing than ever before. He kissed and sucked every square inch of my body before making me come like a bottle rocket.

Before I’d even fully regained my breath, Sam turned to me and raised an eyebrow. “Have you ever been on a motorcycle?”

I pictured the way he’d looked the day he’d ridden into town. Leather jacket and dark helmet, the rumble of the bike’s engine getting louder on its approach, giving me hope that someone might witness Patrick Stanner’s harassment.

It had been like a scene out of a movie.

“No. I would probably crash it the minute I thought about climbing on the thing,” I admitted with a soft laugh. “But I liked watching you ride one.”

Sam leaned in and kissed my jaw. “Hop up. I’m going to take you for a ride.”

I watched his pale ass as he climbed out of my bed.

“Isn’t that what we just did?” I teased before following him. Apparently Sam Rigby knew how to distract me from the fact my life was in shambles.

Because I found I didn’t care nearly as much as I should have.

I drove us to Rockley Lodge in Truman’s Subaru since I’d left the rental bike at Tiller and Mikey’s place. Truman chatted nervously the whole way there, even after I’d reached for his hand and held it firmly. Finally, I looked over and said, “Baby, if you don’t want to ride on the bike, that’s totally fine with me.”

His eyes widened behind his glasses. He was fucking adorable. “I can want to ride and also be nervous as heck about it.”

“Point taken.”

He looked ahead at the impressive exterior of Tiller and Mikey’s lodge. “I’ve always loved this place. But you know what I love better? Mikey’s peanut butter cookies. Do you think he’s made any recently?”

If he hadn’t, I’d bribe him into making some while we were on our ride. If that would make Truman happy, I’d do whatever it took to make it happen.

And that was a scary-ass thought. I was falling for this sweet man when the last thing I needed in my life was another person to care about and another reason to consider uprooting my life in Texas and moving miles and miles away from home.

“We can ask him,” I said, trying to put those thoughts out of my mind. I didn’t need to make any long-term decisions right now. Right now was simply about getting the bike and enjoying a morning ride in the mountains with a beautiful man.

But our plans were foiled as soon as we got inside.

Tiller gestured us into the kitchen with a sense of urgency. When we walked in, I saw Mikey on the phone. As soon as I saw his face, I knew something awful had happened.

He waved me closer. “Sophie, he just walked in. Hang on.”

Mikey covered the microphone. “It’s your mom. She’s been in an accident.”

My stomach dropped, and I grabbed the phone. Guilt flooded my gut since I’d put Mom and Sophie’s numbers on mute in my phone earlier. They’d obviously needed me, and I hadn’t been reachable. Instead, I’d been selfishly indulging in Truman’s body.

“What happened?” I asked when I got the phone to my ear.

Sophie was crying. “She’s alive. But she’s real hurt. I need you. Kira’s still in lockup, and I’m all alone here. I don’t want to call Ethan because things aren’t all that great with us right now, and I just… can you please come home?”

She sounded so scared, so unsure of herself. It reminded me of all the times she’d asked me to hold her when our dad was in one of his rages.

“Was it an auto accident? What kind of injuries does she have?”

“I don’t even know yet. All they’ll tell me is she’s in surgery. If… if it’s bad news, I don’t think I can handle this by myself.”
