“Now where you gonna go, Lady? I got you trapped.”

My response died in my throat as our eyes met. His gaze darkened, dropping to my chest and back to my mouth. My nipples were cold and wet from the water, hard pebbles under my thin shirt. I ached to feel his mouth on them, warming the buds but keeping them hard for another reason entirely. My breath caught as he lowered his chin, rubbing against one, his gaze never leaving mine.

“I might buck you off,” I threatened, my voice weak.

“I’d like to see you try,” he responded, sinking lower, his chest pressing into mine. His heat was shocking through my wet clothes, his power and strength evident. Yet I felt no fear.

Only desire.

I wanted to feel his lips on mine. His hands on my body. If I was honest, I had wanted to feel that from the moment I saw him across the airport.

I shifted my hips, and he groaned, the sound erotic. He rolled his hips, and I felt him, hard and big, through the layers of fabric.

I couldn’t resist. I didn’t want to.

I pulled his mouth to mine.

CHAPTER SIX

LUKE

Jesus, her mouth. I thought her smile was pure sunshine, but nothing compared to the heat that hit me when I slid my tongue inside to meet hers. Desire, hot and potent, licked up my spine, turning my cock into steel. I slanted my head, going deeper into the wetness of her kiss. She tasted of apple, sweet and tart, and something unique—something I was certain was just Sammy.

I knew I shouldn’t be kissing her. But I was powerless to stop.

I had caught glimpses of her all morning, walking, exploring. Talking to Callie and some of the hands. Peeking at the cows and horses. She had a book in her hands she wrote in constantly. My curiosity raged, wanting to know what she was writing. I got busy with a hurt horse and then realized I hadn’t seen her for a long time, so I went searching.

I had seen her on the boulder, her head lifted to the sun, her honey-colored hair a mass of brilliant gold falling behind her. She stood, walking into the water, her hands on her hips, seemingly lost in thought. I was certain she would have heard me walking up with Maverick trailing behind me, but once again, I startled her. When she fell into the river, I rushed to get her, worried she had hurt herself. What happened after was as unexpected as it was delightful. Her surprising push. Her teasing. The laughter she had brought to the surface. No one could make me laugh the way she seemed to.

It was that damn smile of hers. Pure sunshine.

And now with her under me, I wanted to feel her heat in a completely different way.

She whimpered in pleasure, her arms tightening around my neck. I sat up, bringing her with me so she straddled my lap. The wet denim covering our legs was coarse and rough. Her mouth was smooth, her tongue silky and sweet. I slid my hands under her wet shirt, tugging on the hem. I wanted to know how her skin felt against mine.

Until I heard it. The sound of a horse approaching. Maverick whinnied, and with a low curse, I stood, pushing Sammy away. She stumbled but remained upright, her gaze confused.

“Someone is coming,” I said, heading toward my shirt and hat lying on the bank.

I looked toward the hill, Jeff appearing at the crest. He waved and trotted over. “Found her, did you?”

“Yep.”

“Went for a swim?” he asked, lifting one eyebrow in question at our wet clothes.

“I slipped in the river, and when Luke tried to help me, he fell too,” Sammy said, extending her hand. “I’m Sammy, by the way.”

He bent, shaking her hand, then with a wink, tipped his hat. “Howdy, ma’am.”

Sammy laughed, clapping her hands. “Perfect!”

Jeff laughed, and I felt a grin pulling on my lips. I had told him what she had said as we were patrolling the borders, checking fences. He had chuckled, finding it all as confusing as I did. But he had obviously listened.

He straightened in the saddle. “Okay. I’ll, ah, leave you to it. Callie saved you some lunch, Sammy. It’s her homemade stew—you don’t want to miss my wife’s stew.”

“Thanks,” Sammy replied.

Jeff met my eyes. “She saved you some too, boss.”

“Great. I’ll be along shortly.”

He nodded and turned his horse, moving away.

Sammy and I stood watching him, then I turned to her. Her mouth was swollen, her eyes bright. Her hair was a mess and her cheeks were flushed, but all of that could be put down to a dunk in the river.

At least that was what I told myself.

“Should I apologize?” I asked.

“For what? Kissing me?”

I rubbed a hand over my chin, feeling the thick stubble under my fingers. “Yeah.”
