Again, Cane’s words have an effect on me.

Kidnap me? That’s kind of hot actually…

But this is not the time or place—on the sidewalk in front of a row of apartment buildings—for me to start exploring my untapped sexual fantasies. So without even a single moment’s hesitation, I smile at my savior of the day and slide into the back seat of his car.

Christ, that was the hottest thing I’ve ever witnessed. Mari is everything I hoped and more. So, so much more.

It’s like someone up there took pity on me and my lonesome bachelor ways and sent her down from heaven, my angel, as the most perfect woman in the world, just for me. And now she’s mine. And I’m not going to do a single goddamn thing to jeopardize that.

It feels strange pulling up to the house with her by my side—to step out of the car with her and stretch out my hand to her. I’ve never brought a girl back here before. None of the guys who work for me understand. They see me—the boss, the bachelor, with a mansion fit for Bruce Wayne and the looks to match—going home by himself every night, not bar-hopping or cruising the clubs, and they wonder if I’ve lost my mind.

“You know how many chicks you could get, boss?”

“He could be swimming in pussy!”

Those are the things they say on a daily basis, and while they may be true, as I take the steps up to the house with Mari by my side, I’m happy as hell that I’ve lived my life the way I did. Now this moment is special, shared only by her and me.

She seems nervous as she walks beside me, placing each foot in front of the other carefully like she might break something if she isn’t careful. If only she knew just how perfect she looks exactly as she is.

I’m walking a little funny too, but it’s not because I’m nervous. It’s because I’m still all boned up from what just went on in the back seat of the bus.

“You…you live here?” she asks as we reach the top of the stairs and find ourselves standing on the stone patio before the front door. “This isn’t a house. It’s a palace!”

I chuckle. “Well, I’m glad you like it, because you live here too now, Mari.”

She turns, and her eyes move to me with such vulnerability that every masculine urge to protect rises within me. I want nothing more than to protect this girl from every possible threat in the world, and I will. Whether it’s scum like Pesky Pete or men much more vicious, no harm will ever come to her. Not while I’m around.

“You…you can’t be serious, Cane.”

“I sure can.” I smile, my gaze wrapping around her dangerous curves. I’ve only just gotten my hands on her, and I’m dying for more. I have to stop myself from growling out loud when I think of all the things I have to teach her.

I reach out and take her hand, which is trembling slightly. “Come inside. Let me show you around your new home.”

Mari blushes, looking embarrassed. Little does she know that by the time I’m done with her, it’s not just her face that’s going to be red; it’s going to be her entire body. But that comes later. Right now, I lead her to the door and press my watch against the keypad to unlock it.

“Wow, like James Bond!” she exclaims, delighted as the door swings open.

“Well, I can’t just have anyone and everyone coming in here, you know.” I lead Mari a few paces into the house but stop when I feel her tug on my hand. I look back to see her gawking up at the crystal chandelier and the Renaissance style mural I had painted on the ceiling. Slowly, she turns her eyes to me.

“What exactly is it that you do?” she asks. “And why in the world would a man like you ever ride the bus?”

I chuckle slightly and pull her closer. “Well, the answer to that second question is obvious, isn’t it?” I ask. “The answer to that one is…you.”

I kiss her, embracing these foreign emotions I’m not used to feeling.

Keep her safe. The thought fills my mind like rushing waters of a flood as I grip her tiny waist and pull her to me.

I can feel the nervousness in her kiss; she wants to impress me. If only she knew I am feeling the exact same way.

Slowly, I let our lips part, then tenderly brush away a strand of hair that has fallen in front of her face, blocking my view of her beauty.

“And to your first question.” I smile. “I own a construction company. Emery Construction. I ride bus routes sometimes to pick out new development sites. You just happened to be on one that I got on that day. Like fate…”
