Flo gave him a fierce glare. “We’ve said he’s important, and we meant it.”

“Why haven’t you told us about the Guardians? You don’t think we could have been working together?” the Soul Weaver demanded.

Willie smiled. “It’s a safety thing. We have only enough magic to protect the Weavers. If the pestilents know about the Guardians, they become a target and the battle is over before we can even gather the Weavers. The Guardians’ strength is their secrecy.”

Jo clapped her hands. “Now, you all need to prepare for the trip. Have fun, boys!”

With that, they disappeared.

Harrison stood silently, still in awe over being in the presence of the actual Weavers. Most of those in his society just dreamed of being among them. “It might help if you all tell me which Weaver you are. I know the Air Weaver and the Soul Weaver.”

“I’m Grey. How’d you know I was the Soul Weaver?”

“Because you tried to read my thoughts. That’s what you do, isn’t it?”

“Among other things,” Grey murmured. He started pointing around the room and making introductions. He’d already picked up on the redheaded man as Baer, and now he knew he was the Animal Weaver. The slender Asian man turned out to be the Water Weaver and was called Calder, while the man who’d been last to lower his gun was Lucien, the Fire Weaver. Clay was the Earth Weaver.

Calder walked to him and shook his hand. “Welcome to our home,” he said with a friendly smile.

He shook Calder’s hand. “I’m happy to meet you all even if it is under such dire circumstances. This is truly an honor.”

“A secret society, huh? Just like us.” Calder stepped away from him and walked to Lucien, threading their fingers together. Definitely more than just friends, but a couple? Dating Weavers? That was unexpected.

In fact, all of the extra men in the room surprised him. “Who are all the rest of you?” He looked at Wiley.

“We’re the soul mates,” Wiley answered. “Guess you guys don’t have all the information, then.” He started pointing. “This is Dane, who is bonded to Clay. I’m Wiley and I’m with Baer. That’s Cort, who is bonded to Grey, and then there’s Gio. He belongs to Lucien and Calder.”

“A trio?” Shock froze him in place. “And wait, what do you mean by soul mates? There’s never been any information on those.”

“That’s because the Weavers have never had soul mates before. It’s different this time, and we’re hoping that means something.” Wiley wrapped his arm around the Animal Weaver. “Each of us bonded to a Weaver and got powers.”

“Actual powers?” This was unheard of, and there was nothing in the tons of writings on the Weavers about this. Just hearing it threatened to knock Harrison’s knees out from under him. “Like what kinds of powers?”

“I can heal,” Dane answered. “Wiley can communicate with animals, Gio turns invisible—things like that.”

“This is extraordinary!” Excitement hummed through Harrison. He needed a computer or at least a pen and paper to start writing all of this down. New information on the Weavers wasn’t exactly easy to come by. “How did you know you’d each found your soul mate?”

Grey cleared his throat. “I can see a red ribbon between them that ties them together.”

“Well, you didn’t see it with me,” Cort teased as he stepped in close to his mate.

The Soul Weaver flashed Cort a grumpy expression that only made the man’s smile grow. “There were extenuating circumstances. I was blind when we met.”

Cort hummed softly, tilting his head and raising his brows, looking like he was considering Grey’s argument. “Well, I guess I can give you that.”

Grey leaned forward and pressed a kiss to Cort’s jaw. “It doesn’t mean I wasn’t hoping like hell that the red ribbon was the second thing I’d see when my sight came back.”

“Second?”

“First thing I wanted to see was your smile.”

Cort blushed. “Smooth talker.”

“Your sight came back?” Harrison interjected before they could fall any farther down the lovey-dovey rabbit hole. “Which means you lost it at some point. Oh, there’s so much data we don’t have.” Harrison wished he had a notebook on him so he could start taking notes.

Clay walked to the long table against the wall and picked up another gun. “I’m kind of freaked there’s a group of people keeping tabs on the Weavers at all.”

Wiley laughed. “It’s all very Buffy-esque.”

“I always liked the musical episode best,” Cort murmured.

“Team Angel or Spike?” Wiley asked with a raised brow.

“Spike all the way,” Cort answered with a low chuckle.

“Huh?” Confusion tightened Baer’s eyebrows.

“I’ll explain later,” Wiley said with a shake of his head as he glanced at his plain-as-day Buffy The Vampire Slayer T-shirt.

Even Harrison knew about that show and he barely watched television, too caught up in books. There were always so many books. He found his gaze wandering back to Hale. He was pale, but Harrison had no way of knowing if that was how he usually looked. “And you just got your powers?”
