Besides, wouldn’t the entire Circle benefit if he found his soul mate? Wiley was confident they were supposed to make a huge difference this time around for the Weavers. Getting one more person—especially one more person with a power—had to be a good thing.
Was that his only reason for wanting to find a mate? Well, it was a pretty good one. He didn’t want to die. And he’d grown to like the Weavers and mates over the past week. He didn’t want them to die either.
What about love?
Not an easy thing to consider when near-certain death was waiting for him in a matter of days. But even if he wasn’t expecting to die in Sedona, the idea of finding the person who would capture his heart would be hard to swallow. The one time he’d been in love had been his first love during high school. It had lasted only a couple of years, but they’d been so lost in each other and their own world.
Kevin had been his favorite star in the sky.
Until it had all just fizzled out and he was left alone. A comet streaking alone across the black void, pushed and pulled by the gravitational forces of objects bigger than himself.
Sure, he’d dated through college, but it was never anything serious or remotely permanent. Just a fling. Some laughs. The occasional hot sex. Then it was back to the same old routine of work and school.
Stretching his legs out as far as he could, Hale glanced over at Harrison as he continued to type away at his laptop. What kind of a soul mate did that man have waiting to be discovered?
Harrison with a soul mate.
Hale’s mind was completely blank. What kind of person would complete Harrison’s orderly life? Neat and tidy. Probably bookish.
But as reserved as he was in everyday life, did that mean he was wild and adventurous in his sex life?
The image of a half-naked Harrison on his knees in front of a leather-clad dominatrix popped into his head and he grinned. Did Harrison want to be tied up or just spanked when he was naughty?
Harrison must have noticed his crazy grin because he suddenly looked at Hale and frowned. “What are you smiling about?”
“I was wondering if you were into Shibari or if you just like to be spanked?” Hale answered without blinking an eye.
“What?” Harrison squawked.
Unfortunately, Cort had been taking a drink of water at the time and spewed it across his half of the front windshield before settling into a fit of coughing.
“What the hell!” Grey shouted.
“Sorry. Hale,” Cort choked out.
“Yeah, yeah,” Grey grumbled. “His loud thoughts wandered, and I’ve spent the last couple of minutes reciting the state capitals to drown him out.”
“No, and my private life is none of your business,” Harrison snapped.
“I know. I was just wondering what your soul mate might be like and that led me to wonder about other things. I wasn’t going to say anything, but you asked.”
“Hale, go to sleep,” Grey growled.
He wasn’t sure if the Soul Weaver actually used his gift or if he was just tired, but Hale drifted off to sleep minutes later.
When he woke, it was to see Grey pulling the SUV into the fractured and bumpy parking lot of a no-star motel. The sun was low in the sky, casting long shadows and giving the rather normal place a menacing air. Or maybe he’d just suffered through some dark dreams he couldn’t now remember.
“We stopping for the night?” Hale asked around a yawn.
“We need food and to check our route. Traffic was slow through Birmingham. We lost a lot of time through it,” Grey muttered, sounding incredibly stressed.
“Lucien’s SUV nearly got sideswiped, and he’s threatening to melt tires if we don’t stop for the night,” Cort added.
That would be bad.
Hale climbed out of the SUV and stretched his arms over his head, reaching up to the sky. He wiggled his fingers and swallowed back a giggle at the feel of the wind slithering between them like a cat seeking attention. Part of him longed to tap into his gift and soar into the air. A few minutes of drifting on the currents would be enough to rejuvenate him after spending hours in the car.
He looked to find Calder and Gio cuddling a grumpy Lucien beside their SUV. Wiley and Baer were walking toward them, but Clay and Dane were nowhere to be seen.
“Clay and Dane are already inside getting the rooms,” Grey said absently, causing Hale to smirk. The Soul Weaver couldn’t help himself. Though it probably would be helpful if Hale learned to not think so loudly at his new brother. It had to be exhausting to constantly be bombarded by the thoughts of others.
With the intention of putting some more distance between himself and Grey, Hale turned toward Harrison and flashed the man his most harmless smile. “Were you able to get a lot of work done?”
