I forget everything else and start working on my notes for the meeting. My schedule is busy this morning. I wish it wasn’t, but it works because she won’t be here until the afternoon.

***

I’ve missed Demi all morning. My phone is on the charger in my office because I’d been so preoccupied with her, I forgot to charge it all weekend. Damn, the woman makes me forget everything, and I love it.

I can’t wait to see her. I’ve checked my watch ten times in the last hour. She’s in class for another thirty minutes, but I’m entering another meeting and won’t be out by the time she arrives. My last meeting of the day is at three, but I just got a call that their flight was delayed, and they won’t be in the city until tonight, so my meeting has been pushed until tomorrow.

I tap my pen on my pad of paper as I listen to my project manager explain the plans for the next quarter. I’m itching to see my woman. Once the meeting’s over, I dart out of the room and straight to my office to find it empty.

I storm out, bark out at my assistant, “Where is Ms. Sweets. I thought I told you to have her wait inside.”

“She was, but like usual she can’t manage a simple task. I don’t know where she is.”

I slam my hand on my desk and snarl at her, “Damn it.” I enter my office and pick up a lacy pair of panties on my desk.

Chapter Nine

Demi

I’m so excited to see Stone, I can’t breathe. The drive to the office is a silent one because I’m anxious to be wrapped up in Stone’s arms. I rush to the elevators and head up to the offices. When I come in, Ms. Riley is waiting for me. “Mr. Harding said to wait for him in his office.”

I walk into his office, and she follows. “Do you know how long he’s going to be?”

“No, but you can wait here. I’m sure you’re only here to be his lover. Typical bosses. Fucking the naïve, young employees.”

“You sound like a jealous cunt.”

“Not at all. I just found your underwear on his chair, so I knew you were who I thought you were. It’s not going to get you anywhere with him. You’re not the first intern to spread your legs for him. And I’m sure you won’t be the last. I’m surprised that he wants you to work alongside Adriana. She was his first intern, and Adriana used to spend all her time in his office. If you know what I mean.” I can’t stop the instant tears that come. I don’t want to believe the words, but when I look at the panties in the chair, those aren’t mine.

“I can’t…” I drop the panties on his desk. Disgusted by all of this.

“Hey, maybe there are other things that he wants you to learn from her. He has kept her around for years even though she’s terrible at her job.”

“Excuse me,” I choke out, rushing as fast as I can to the elevator before he sees me. This spring has been pretty warm, so I’m not prepared for the sudden downpour of rain and cold air that adds to my chilled body. I’ve been such a naïve fool. Soaked, I hurry to catch the train to my apartment.

The second I enter my apartment, I fall back against the front door and cry. I don’t even know how long I’m there. A pounding on the door startles me. “Go away.”

“Damn it, Sweets. Open this fucking door right now before I break it down.”

“No, go away. I don’t want anything to do with you.”

“That’s tough shit. I’m not letting you go.”

“Well, I’m letting you go. I don’t want you around. If you don’t leave, I’m calling the cops.”

“What about your grade for your class?” Infuriated, I do something dumb and whip open the door to give him a piece of my mind. He pushes his way in, slamming it closed and wrapping his hands around my body. Stone throws me over his shoulder, his hand swatting my ass.

“Let me down you asshole,” I screech, banging on his back.

“I knew that would get you to open the door. You shouldn’t open the door for a madman, Sweets. Now I’m going to teach you a lesson about trust.”

“I don’t want any lessons from you,” I exclaim. He tosses me on the bed, straddling my body so I can’t get up. Next, I see a pair of handcuffs and hear the click. Before I can do anything, I’m handcuffed to him.

“First, wife. Yes, wife because that’s what I consider you and made it pretty damn clear that’s what you were.”

“I’m not your wife, and I sure as hell won’t be just another woman on a long list of interns used for your pleasure.” My heart aches that he would dare to call me his wife and yet, so quick to betray me.
