I let out a small huff as I switch my phone to silent, knowing that Aaron has been texting me all morning and I haven’t responded. It’s going to drive him crazy if he can’t get in touch with me. Aaron is sexy as hell but he is set in his ways. He’s always trying to boss me around and he is a rule follower. I tend to be a rule breaker so it would never work between us. Well, I break the rules that don’t work for me. It is as close to living on the edge as I can get. That is part of the problem. I know I will fall head over heels in love with him. I might already be there but what would he do if I’m not everything he wants me to be? A relationship isn’t something I can control and conquer. I’m pretty sure that’s not how it works. It’s why I’ve never tried. Aaron though. He has me questioning everything.
I toss my hair up in a messy bun before grabbing a big floppy hat and my sunglasses as I head to the elevator. I should probably take the stairs. It’s only one floor up but it’s Sunday so I get to be extra lazy today.
I take a moment on the short elevator ride to check my phone. Almost every single message is from Aaron. I’ve cracked already. Maybe I should turn my phone off altogether. I can’t help the smile that it gives me knowing he’s so persistent. If he had an inkling how close to caving I am he’d probably show up and steal me away. He is getting harder and harder to resist. I know we’d likely end in heartache. Aaron has parts of his life that are hidden and I don’t do so well with people keeping secrets. It goes along with those control issues I have. I am an open book most times.
I’m pretty sure he did something big before he owned his own security company. How else does someone go from being almost untraceable to providing security to the richest of the rich? If I had to guess, I’d say he was CIA or a secret agent of some sort. Maybe my imagination is getting the best of me. That’s what my mom would say. Not that I am planning to ask her. If she had any idea I had the hots for a man she’d be all over me about it. She’d be out to lunch with Aaron right now, both of them setting plans in action for marriage. That is another thing about Aaron: I’m pretty sure he is the kind of man that plays for keeps. He wants a full-blown relationship. He has to. No one chases a woman like this to only get in her pants. I’m afraid that he’ll get in too deep and then want out but won’t ask for it. He’d stay because it was what he said he’d do, not because he is truly in love with me. I want what my parents have as much as their PDA grosses me out. I want to gross my own kids out one day too.
The elevator dings, alerting me that I’ve reached the pool. The doors slide open, allowing me to step out and seek my usual lounge chair. I give a little wave to my favorite elderly couple, the Thompsons, as well as my neighbor Christian from a few floors down. I place my things on the ground so I can take off my cover-up. I fix the strings on my bikini before lying on what is going to be my peaceful oasis for the next few hours.
“It’s been a few weeks since you’ve been up here.” My eyes lift from my Kindle to see Christian standing beside my chair smiling down at me. He looks more like he should be on a beach and not a rooftop pool.
“I’ve been busy with family stuff. Today I’m going to relax. How are things with you?” I answer to be courteous even though I’m wanting to be left alone. Christian and I are just friends even though he is easy on the eyes. He’s asked me out in the past but I’m too wrapped up in Aaron to even give someone else a chance. He’s always respected my decision to be friends but I can still feel the attraction he has to me. I don’t know why I was never into the blond laid-back type with the perfect body and face. It felt too pretty to me for some reason. He probably spends more time getting ready to go out than I do and I can take my sweet-ass time.
We fall into small talk and he has me laughing, telling me all about the building gossip as he takes a seat next to my lounger. Everyone in the building has their own small area that’s theirs alone. Christian stops talking mid-sentence, looking around. I start doing the same, thinking maybe there’s a bee or something. Then I hear it.
