Even I have to admit, her feet are damn cute. In some of the pictures she wears adorable toe rings, and she changes the color of toenail polish to various vibrant colors.

“Yes, just my feet. Not that it’s your business.”

“Wrong. Everything about you is my business.”

“Wilde, shouldn’t you be worrying about your court case? And figuring out how to get the charges dropped, so you can go back to school?”

There’s kindness in her tone–and genuine curiosity–and that’s the only reason I don’t immediately shut her down.

“I don’t want to go back.”

There. I admitted it to her. The thing I hadn’t even quite admitted to myself.

I’m a bit surprised when I see compassion in her gaze. She rises up on her knees on the bed, and it gets my dick rock hard. “Yeah, but you’ll be kicked out of the pack if you don’t resolve it. It’s kind of a lose-lose situation for you.”

I drop her laptop on the bed and tunnel my hand through my hair. “You noticed that, too, huh?”

“Did you admit anything when you were taken into jail?”

I shake my head. “I didn’t say a word.”

“Were they even your drugs?”

I stare at her, surprised that of all the people who might have wondered that she’s the only one who actually did. “What makes you ask that?”

“Why are you dodging the question?”

Smart girl.

I suddenly can’t keep my hands off her. I wrap my hands around her upper arms and deadlift her into the air to dangle her over the floor for a moment before I drop her softly to her feet.

“Worry about your own shit, Rayne.” I smack her ass. “I made pancakes.”

“For me?” She twists to look at me over one shoulder. She sounds shocked.

I snort. “What, you thought I just made them for myself and ate them all?”

“Well…yeah.”

I give her ass a light smack again. I might be getting slightly obsessed with the idea of spanking her.

Being in charge of her. Teaching her another lesson.

Taking care of her through her transition.

She scoots out the door, straight to the kitchen, which pleases my wolf to no end.

“You need lots of protein right now. Shifting uses a ton of calories, especially at first as your body is changing.”

I pull out a chair at the kitchen table and set one of the huge plates of food in front of her with a fork.

“Um, thank you.” Her big blue eyes follow me as I pick up the second plate and sit down beside her to eat it.

She eats in silence for a few minutes, shoveling food into her mouth like she was starving. “Do you really think I can shift?” she asks.

“Oh, you’re going to shift,” I say although I’m not certain it’s true.

Now that she planted the seed of doubt, I can see that she might be right to worry. Just because she has a wolf in there somewhere doesn’t mean she’ll ever figure out how to get it out.

I should probably bring her to Alpha Green, so he can use the alpha command on her to get her to shift, but for some reason, I feel proprietary over Rayne’s shift. Like no one else gets to know about it except me. Or at least, not until after I’ve groomed her. I want to be the one to teach her to shift. To help her with the transition.

And no, it’s definitely not out of brotherly devotion.

My wolf craves Rayne. I don’t know what that means. If it’s just a reaction to living in the same house as a female going through transition or if it’s something more.

All I know is that she feels like mine.

And the only way in hell this can ever come out right is if we get that wolf out of Rayne.

Because I’m not going to be the loser who fucks his defective stepsister.

“What if I can’t?” she asks.

“You can. I saw your wolf. She’s in there, and she wants out. So forget about driving lessons. Today you’re getting shifting lessons. And we’re going to keep at it until I see that silver-eyed bitch.”

Rayne hides her face behind her hair, bending her head down to her pancakes. After she devours several more, she asks, “Think she’s grey?”

“Maybe. Or she might be white. That would be something, wouldn’t it?”

Especially considering my wolf is black. We’d be yin and yang. Big and small. Black and white.

I don’t know why I’m thinking of us as we. That’s weird.

Rayne doesn’t manage to finish more than half the plate I fixed for her, but it was still a ton of food, so I’m satisfied. I clear the plates, covering hers with plastic wrap and putting it in the refrigerator for later.

“All right. Meet me on the back deck in five.”

“I…” Rayne looks like she’s going to protest but then seems to change her mind. “Okay.”
