Derrick Anders was once the CEO and founder of the world-renowned tech company, Anders Tech, which was acquired by a larger company earlier this year. After the acquisition was complete, Mr. Anders released a statement explaining that he was retiring and leaving the city. His whereabouts are currently unknown.

The shock that burns through me is so pure and immediate that I'm on my feet without even realizing it.

I'm reading a news article about Derrick. An article about a millionaire. He’s a freaking millionaire, and he didn't tell me.

My chest is tight, and I can hear the rushing of blood in my ears. I'm having a hard time breathing, and all I can think about is the way he's held onto every scrap of information about my life I've offered. How he's discouraged me from applying to jobs, and how he's so secretive about his home, his life, his business.

My entire body trembles. He had one of his old techie friends offer me a job just so he could keep me in his sphere. A job that would be a dream for me—but not if I didn't earn it.

Why would he lie?

The question swirls through my mind, but I already know the answer. Derrick has an iron grip on his entire world, and he wants me to be a part of it, but only on his terms. I know the truth now, and I'm not going to stick around to let him play any more games.

I grab my stuff and get as far away from this house, from him, as quickly as possible. If only my hands would stop shaking long enough to pack. I have to get out of here.

My things are still scattered around the bedroom, and I grab whatever's closest and shove it into a bag. A shirt, a pair of underwear, a phone charger. There's no rhyme or reason to what I'm gathering, and I'm not even sure I can get the bag shut when it's full.

Now, with my bag in hand and my thoughts spinning out of control, I grab my phone and call the only person in town I know will pick up right away. Thank goodness he flew in just last night.

"Dad? It's hard to explain, but do you think you can pick me up?"

DERRICK

When I get the notification from my security camera that Alina has walked out of the front door, I don't pay it any mind. She's taken a liking to walking the property while she has her morning coffee, and it satisfies me on a deep level that she's so comfortable in my home.

I've tried to put a few hours in each day at Sage and Salt after so many days of barely leaving the bed with Alina. I hate leaving her, but there is a certain satisfaction I get from working here with my hands that can't be replicated.

But a little more than an hour later, I get a new notification.

ALERT: Vehicle detected

I open the security app and see there's a vehicle parked in my driveway. Alina is climbing inside. Who the hell is picking her up?

I'm halfway to the door before the car is out of sight, but once I'm behind the wheel, I have no idea where they could have gone. Where the fuck is she, and who the fuck is with her?

Desperate to know more, I go back and watch the earlier video of when she first left the house this morning. Instead of a relaxing walk, I see her go to the mailbox, look over a letter inside, and snap a picture with her phone.

Now I realize my mistake. Alina was done waiting for me to open up to her, and she went to get the answers herself.

Fuck! I should have told her my name, shown her who I am and what I've built. But I wanted her to accept me for me, not the things I own. Now she knows, and it's changed the dynamic between us.

Pulling out my phone, all I can do is call her. Unsurprisingly, she ignores the call. So I send a text instead, my blood pressure so high I can hear my pulse in my ears.

Derrick: Alina. Who the fuck are you with?

As soon as I send it, I know it's too aggressive, but what else can I do? She's with a stranger, putting miles between us with every second. I know where her father's house is, but I don't even know if that's where she's going.

What if she's going somewhere else? What if she's going back to Indiana?

The thought is so chilling that it makes me sick. If I have to live without Alina, then I don't want to. Not for a moment.

Alina: It's none of your business, Derrick ANDERS.

Derrick: Like hell it isn't.

Alina: Oh, so you get to know what I’m doing at all times now?
