I sighed. “The new lady is starting today, actually. Carrie wanted to approve her, which I allowed because they would be spending the majority of their time together. I think you’ll like her a lot. But, as of right now, I’m officially off for the next three days. I have my second-in-command manning the fort so I can spend some time with y’all. Carrie gave me shit, too. When does this drunk and disorderly start?”

He grinned then. “I said nothing about disorderly.”

“Really?” I shrugged. “And is it just me? Or others?”

I hoped it was just me.

“Well, that’s the other favor that I need.” He went on. “I need you to ask your friend Sara. And any of your other friends that want to join. The more, the merrier. He’d like to have ten volunteers.”

I sighed.

There went my quiet night.

Not that I ever had a problem with spending time with Sara and my brother.

“I’ll ask her.”

He all but pumped his fist into the air and smiled.

This kid…

“Okay, great! Be there at five!”

Then he all but ran out of my office, waving at my second-in-command as he did.

Lars gave him a chin lift and disappeared into his own office.

I reached for my cell phone and called my best friend.

“I need a favor,” I said to Sara as soon as she answered.

I met Sara when I was young. So young, in fact, that I can’t even remember a time without her in my life.

Sara and I were inseparable when we were younger, but as my career in baseball advanced, we’d pulled apart.

That was where Greer came in. She was her other best friend.

Greer and I were like oil and water.

We did not get along at all.

We both hated each other because we both wanted Sara to ourselves, and we couldn’t have it because we were too stubborn to try and get along.

And let’s not forget that Greer had Sara alone for years because of my stupidity. It was my fuckin’ turn.

So when I heard Sara’s reply of “as long as you don’t mind Greer coming along,” after my long-winded explanation of the drunk and disorderly bullshit that Finn wanted me to do, I ground my teeth.

Sara and I had no romantic designs toward each other at all. Not even a little bit.

Not only had we not tried, but we hadn’t wanted to try, either.

What I did know was Greer’s irrational irritation with me was unfounded. And she’d set the tone.

When I’d heard that not only had Finn followed me down here, but Sara had, too, at first I’d been super excited. I mean, I had my best friend here.

But then I’d heard through Sara that Greer had followed her, and now I had to deal with seeing that jerk all day, every day.

Why? Because she worked in the same fuckin’ office building as me. Though I bought the building upon starting my career, I’d rented out the other half to the previous tenant that’d been in the building in the same spot for the last thirty years. What I hadn’t realized at the time was that the taxidermist that I’d rented the place out to was selling out to another taxidermist that’d just moved to the area.

That taxidermist being Greer fucking Ortiz.

Fuck my life.

“And you promise that if I bring Greer—where I’d like to point out that we were already going out to dinner tonight, so that is why she has to come—that you’ll be nice to her?” she pushed.

I mean, if I fuckin’ had to be.

“Sure,” I lied.

Neither one of us would be civil. But when Sara was really paying attention, then maybe we would pretend.

“Why do I not believe you?” she sighed. “Dude, I moved here for you.”

“You brought her with you,” I pointed out.

“She decided to come because she loves me, too. But seriously, I moved here because I missed the hell out of you, and you wouldn’t come home. Y’all need to get over this fighting crap. Seriously,” she ordered.

Same story, different day.

“Sure,” I continued to lie. “I’ll get right on that.”

She sighed.

“Whatever,” she grumbled. “I’ll need you to go over there and tell her, though. In fact, if you could pick her up, and then pick me up, that would be great.” She paused. “I’ll tell her that we’re doing this so she doesn’t think you’re trying to kidnap her.”

I snorted.

The sad fact was, Greer would never willingly get onto the back of my bike or into my car with me without first getting the okay from Sara. Mostly because practical pranks flew when we were around each other.

“Thanks,” I muttered. “And I’m on my bike today. But I have to go home anyway because I have to check on Carrie and the new night nurse. But then we’ll be over. Send the text now so she doesn’t shoot me when I walk in the door.”
