He scoffed. “I can’t believe I’ve been bringing you cookies home from Miami every time I go. That’s so dirty.”

When I turned around next, it was to see him inches away from the other side of the shower glass.

I blinked. “What?”

His eyes watched a soap bubble start at my collarbone and sluice down the length of my chest, curling around one nipple.

“I don’t like the idea of being gone for any length of time,” he grumbled so quietly I could barely hear him over the shower spray. “But I certainly don’t want to stop whatever the fuck you call this.” He gestured from himself to me.

I felt some sort of tension in my chest release at his words.

I agreed with him.

I didn’t want to stop, either.

“We need to tell Sara, though.” He studied my face, his gaze locking with mine. “I don’t like hiding it. At least not from her.”

I felt relief hit me.

I hadn’t realized that I wanted to let her in, either, until he said it.

“Okay,” I said. “But I’m not telling her. You are.”

His lips quirked up at that. “I have to go.”

I tried to smile.

I really did.

But it came out more of a grimace. I tried to cover it up with a wisecrack, but he saw right through me.

“Have fun, darling,” I quipped.

His eyes studied me hard for a few long seconds. Just when I thought I’d gotten away with it, he reached forward, opened the shower glass, and then reached directly into the spray for my neck. Pulling me to him, he waited until I was only a few millimeters away before saying, “I don’t fucking like this, either.”

“What?” I asked, water droplets dripping down the length of my face.

“The fact that I fuckin’ care why you’re upset right now,” he grumbled darkly.

I licked my lips, catching the very edges of his as I did.

He sighed. “Fuck.”

Then he was kissing me.

Just as fast, I was shoved back under the water and half drowned.

Sputtering, I said, “You’re such an ass!”

That’s when the water went ice cold.

I shrieked, and all I heard was the ghost of his laugh as he left the room and I fumbled with the water taps.

“Asshole!” I cried out.

“Jesus is your Lord and Savior!” Brian so helpfully called out.

-Davis to a client

DAVIS

“Listen up, you little prick,” my newest client said. “I’m everyone and you’re no one. You’re so last year that it’s not even funny. What would you fuckin’ know about bodyguarding? I could pick you up and toss you over my shoulder.”

The fact that I’d left town for this little joke of a professional baseball player was really playing with my nerves.

I looked at the man that hired me.

At one point in time, we’d played on the same team. We’d spent hours and hours on end watching game tape, talking, playing together, practicing. You name it, and we fuckin’ did it.

Now, he was a coach, and he was supposed to be someone that this “player” looked up to.

I could see him losing his cool, though.

“I’m not a fuckin’ dumbass,” Hancock “Parts” Peters snapped.

The man, also known as the moron in my brain for the last ten minutes, squinted his eyes. “I like how you think that just because your hot fuck of a wife recommended him, you think that I’ll just go along with it. He’s an ex-baseball player. What could he do for me that I can’t?”

I saw the moment that Hancock changed his mind about helping this fool.

I knew that my trip to Miami was a wasted effort.

The only reason that I’d taken the job was because of Hancock. If his desire to help was gone, my desire to be there would be gone just as quickly.

“I’m sorry, but what did you say about my Sway?” Hancock gave him a chance to backpedal, but the dumb fuck didn’t take it.

“Listen,” McGillicutty grumbled. “It’s nothing against her. She’s hot AF in that big girl kind of way. But she shouldn’t control…”

Before Hancock could swing and hit the poor dummy, I got up and stood between them.

“Well, since you have that viewpoint on me already, I suppose that means that my services aren’t required,” I told Van McGillicutty. “You do still owe me for the airfare to get here, as well as the billable hours I’ve spent ‘guarding’ you for the last six hours while you did whatever you did here today.” I gestured at the building surrounding us. “And for your information, there are about six young girls out there looking to get their breasts signed. I’d recommend against that because one of them is carrying a Glock 43 in her waistband. I’m not saying that she’s gonna shoot you, but there’s a definite possibility.”

McGillicutty’s eye twitched. “I’m not paying you shit.”

I laughed. “You already signed the contract.”
