“Oh, wow.” Carrie raised her brows. “That’s really interesting.”

It was.

I should’ve probably asked that about them when I saw them tonight. But I was too worried about getting her to somewhere where I could keep an eye on her in a structured environment that I could control to make small talk.

“Anyway, since they never really go out much, they’re subject to what I listen to or say.” She shrugged.

The nurse finished with Carrie’s bolus tube feeding and walked to the sink to wash everything. Meanwhile, I tried really freakin’ hard not to completely stare at my new houseguest.

She had scared the shit out of me earlier.

Last night, after hearing her words about being a woman and how it was terrifying to be alone at night in our alley, I’d gotten to work making sure that she could be at our place safely. Then this morning, I’d been so damn proud of getting it done in under a few hours, thinking that I was hot shit. I’d fully expected her to come to my office today and thank me. Hell, that’d been why I’d gone in after all.

Lars had seen me and had instantly rolled his eyes.

Meanwhile, I’d only done what I did so I could get recognition. So I could get her to come to me.

And she’d definitely come to me all right, but it hadn’t been for what I’d expected.

Seeing the terror in her eyes. Hearing the way her hoarse screams for me echoed around the office had done something to my soul in those few moments it’d taken me to get to her. Needless to say I wouldn’t be forgetting the sound anytime soon.

“Why are you here, doll?” Carrie asked. “Not that I mind feminine company or anything.”

She smiled, but the smile didn’t reach her eyes.

My sister was bored.

I knew that.

I needed to work on finding her something to do, places to go, and getting her out and about to live her life. However, it was hard.

I was doing everything I could, and short of taking her out myself—which I did most days that I could, taking her out for an ice cream or on a stroll down the walking trail that went through town—I was stuck.

Carrie required a lot of help to get her out and about.

Since she could only control her arms and head, and nothing else, that meant that she couldn’t help get herself into the car. She couldn’t help feed herself. She couldn’t do anything that a normal person could do.

Leaving the house required the use of our van, which was massive and bulky due to all of the shit she required when she left the house.

I cleared my throat and looked away from my sister before saying, “Later.”

Later, as in when the nurse, who was very careful to appear as if she wasn’t listening to a word we all said, left the room.

Finn caught on quickly. Carrie, one to not be outdone, caught on just as quick and nodded her understanding.

“I’m here because I’m apparently unable to take care of myself,” Greer said. “Blockhead over here doesn’t like that I don’t have heat. Last week he decided to slash my tires and force me to take my car into the shop to get new ones. And while it was there, they decided that all kinds of other things needed to be fixed on it. And now I’ve been walking to work for the last week.”

“Your walk to work is all of ten minutes,” I pointed out.

“Whatever it is,” Greer shrugged, “I still have to work. The least you could’ve done was offer me a ride since you’re the reason I don’t have a car.”

“She does have a point,” Carrie laughed, the smile on her face breathtaking. “You have better manners than that.”

I did.

But Carrie didn’t know.

Hell, I didn’t know really.

The feelings that rocketed through me when Greer was in my line of sight…

I’d always heard that there was a fine line between love and hate.

And lately, that line was definitely blurring.

The older we got, and the more she grew into herself, the more I looked.

And the more I liked what I saw.

Hell, when I’d first seen her after getting out of prison…holy fuck, my breath had straight left my chest for a good thirty seconds.

Greer had been wearing much of what she was wearing right now.

Tight-ass jeans that rounded all of her curves so beautifully. A cute gold chain had circled her left ankle, as it did today, right below where her jeans stopped at her lower calf. Cute little strappy sandals that looked like they’d be torture to walk in.

Then there was her shirt.

It was really nothing special. I’d seen thousands of other women wear a white t-shirt.

But the way she wore it.

My god, did it do things for me.

Her brown hair was styled down around her face, and her magnetic brown eyes felt like they were lit from within.
