But before I could call her on it, the sheriff swept his arm out and indicated a room behind a closed door that he was now holding open.

We all filed in, and when we got there, a large conference table loaded with large amounts of beer and alcohol greeted us. It was so full of booze that I could practically see the table sagging.

“Have a seat and dig in,” Sheriff Sunny Summers pulled out a chair, and Sara smiled at him.

Sunny looked like he was going to help her into the chair, but Sara flinched when his hand moved toward her.

She’d always done that. Something that she didn’t talk about, but I could tell that it hurt Sunny to see.

Sheriff Sunny Summers had been the sheriff of the county for a while now. Previous to him, there’d been a horrible sheriff that’d gone out of his way to make the lives of the citizens he was supposed to protect better.

Yet…never did.

When Sunny showed, it was like a breath of fresh air.

And I could tell that Sara was affected by the man.

That would be yet another thing I would be talking to her about.

Why there was so obviously something going on between the two, and I had no clue about it.

Though, saying that, I was quite cowardly, seeing as I still hadn’t told her my own deep, dark secrets.

Such as why I was so terrified of motorcycles and why my mom coming into town always pissed me off.

It wasn’t as if I was trying to keep her in the dark about anything. But I was embarrassed by my weaknesses. And who wanted to tell someone that their own mother stole from them on the regular?

“Why are you over there growling?”

CHAPTER 3

Let’s keep the dumbfuckery to a minimum today.

-Things not to say to your boss

GREER

I glanced at Davis over my shoulder, my eyes narrowing on his closeness.

“Why are you standing so close to me?” I grumbled.

He rolled his eyes and moved toward the opposite end of the table. Which didn’t quite work out the way that he’d planned because by doing so, people followed, and he only ended up directly across the table from me instead of all the way on the opposite end.

I smirked at him, and he flipped me off.

Folsom took the seat directly next to me, while Finn took the one on the other side of Davis. Kobe took one end while Sara took the other.

Sara sat at the head of the table with Davis and me on either side.

I reached over and caught the first bottle my hand was close to, dragging it toward me.

“That’s a dry wine,” Folsom murmured. “Do you like that? It tastes gross to me.”

I shook my head and pushed it toward Sara, who did in fact like dry wine.

“No,” I said. “But she does.”

Folsom glanced at Sara as she expertly popped the wine cork out using a wine opener and her teeth.

I laughed as she uncorked it, then reached for the cold beer that was in a metal tin directly in the middle of the table.

I slid it across the table to myself and twisted off the lid.

Sara, direct as always, waited until Folsom was taking a drink of the small bottle of Fireball in front of her when she said, “So, Folsom. Why don’t you like me?”

Folsom downed the tiny bottle before she turned slightly in her chair so she was able to see Sara.

“I just don’t know how to handle upbeat, bubbly personalities.” Folsom shrugged. “It’s not that I don’t like you. It’s just that I can’t process the emotions in the same way as you. Emotions, especially ones on the happy or excited end, tend to fly right over my head.”

“Why is that?” Kobe asked her point blank, causing Folsom to stiffen slightly.

“Other than the fact that I’m neurotdivergent, mostly a very high functioning Asperger, my brain seems to like to focus on different things, like math problems and random facts about random things, rather than human emotions. I understand them and even feel them, but if they don’t affect me directly, then I tend to brush them to the side.” She took a shot, her eyes closing. “Did you know that if the volcano in Yellowstone erupted, then Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, Utah and Idaho would be wiped right off the map?”

We all blinked at her. “Those places would be decimated. But, even if the other states didn’t get actual lava, then you would have to worry about the ash that would spew across the US. It would smother crops, damage buildings, and shut down power plants. It would be a disaster. And ideally, not even for just the United States. Even the other countries in the world would be affected.”

There was an even longer beat of silence.

“However, scientists don’t really think that it’ll erupt anytime soon. Although some people say that it’s ‘overdue,’ it’s really not. They—the scientists—predict it’ll be something like another ten thousand years.” She paused. “This alcohol tastes very horrible. Like drinking rubbing alcohol.”
