“Don’t you care about what I said? Can you hear yourself?!” Axel barked. He couldn’t believe this shit. Certainly, Legend was intelligent enough to hear the alarms blaring regarding this situation.

“Axel.” Legend yawned while peeking at the baby monitor to check on Roman, then turned back to his piece of paper. “If he is murkin’ mothafuckas, then I’m sure it’s for good cause.”

“Legend, you sound ridiculous. This isn’t no Christmas fundraiser! There is no good cause in this situation!”

“Nothin’ we do according to our true nature is easily explainable. It is what it is.” He shrugged.

“Our brother is out here icing folks!”

“So is the United States government. So are the police departments all over the fuckin’ country who shoot unarmed men and women and go home to eat chili ’nd crackers, like ain’t shit happen. So is the Army, Navy, and Marines. So is anyone who love them some NRA and guns… ’Mericans just merkin’, one nation under God just icin’ like it’s a birthday cake. Look man, wake up. Bodying somebody is just part of life. Church.”

“You know damn well the majority of people in this world are not out here takin’ lives, Legend.”

“But somebody has to do it!” Legend’s light golden eyes darkened to almost black. “You live in this unrealistic fantasy world, Axel, with this idea you’ve created in your head, man. We been killin’ since the beginning of time. Read your Bible. Hell, almost any religious text shows somebody gettin’ ordered by God to kill. Murder is hypocritical in our current society. Then in contradiction it says, ‘Thou Shall Not Kill,’ yet the same folks wavin’ their Bibles around and talkin’ about they a patriot, and a Christian, and wanna kill anyone who thinks different than them. Some of ’em are too chicken shit to fight in a real war where they could get their asses blown to smithereens, and most of ’em be down with the death penalty, too. It didn’t say, ‘Thou Shall Not Kill unless you got cheated on, your child hurt, your homeboy un-alived. That’s proof that people make up shit as they go along. Do what suits them. It’s all a bunch of bullshit and brainwashin’. So to that I say, fuck society, and I listen to my heart and to God.”

“So you think God told Caspian to paint people in red polka dots with his knives and guns?” Axel rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. “It’s clear you’re not equipped to have a rational conversation today. I don’t know what shit you’re on but it’s the wrong shit, I tell ya that much. I’m not being unrealistic. I’m tellin’ you that killing should always be a last resort.”

“I ain’t on shit but coffee, makin’ sure my wife is happy, takin’ care of my seed and my daughter by love and marriage, and gettin’ this menu done. Church. Just ’cause Caspian a civilian doesn’t mean he can’t do what everyone else is doing.” Legend’s nose wrinkled. “Aye, man, have you seen my ham sandwich? Thought I laid it over here.” He picked up a few magazines and checked under those. “Damn. I must’ve left it in Roman’s room.” With a sigh, he grabbed the cold root beer from the table and guzzled it.

“How can you sit there so calm about this? He’s going to end up in prison.”

“Did you end up in prison?” Legend smirked then burst out laughing. “Nah, you didn’t. I was the only one who did, and it was because of my past. The drug dealin’. Ain’t have nothin’ to do with the most nefarious crimes I had committed to date. Nefarious… I like that word. Your wife said it one day and I decided to start usin’ it, too. It pays to be around brainy folks.” He chuckled. Axel shook his head. “Look man, calm down. Caspian knows how to cover his tracks and protect himself.”

“There’s such a thing as pushin’ our luck though, Legend.”

“Ain’t no such thing when you got backup and friends like us around. As long as he’s smart, he’ll be okay.”

“This goes beyond that. It shouldn’t be happening in the first place. I have a bad feeling about this.”

“So you mean to tell me you regret killin’ your wife’s stalker? You regret killin’ those bastards that kept following you around, tryna make you live in fear?”

“No, I don’t, but that’s different.”

“See, the problem with you, Axel, is that you’re new to this. Me and Caspian been killas for the majority of our lives. Caspian since day one.” He held up his finger. “Killing is natural.” Legend is crazy… I say this at least once a month to him, but he is really insane! “It’s society that tries to brainwash us into believing it’s not. As long as we’re not going into schools and havin’ shooting sprees, killin’ babies, kids, and innocent people, I’m fine with it.”
