“This woman pulled up to Aunt Angel’s house. I noticed her car. Nothin’ spectacular about it. Just a Honda.” He shrugged, then took a sip of beer. “I watched from inside the house, from the kitchen window. Was in there with one of Aunt Angel’s friends, Carmela, who was cleanin’ up the place. Noah was outside greetin’ folks for the yard sale and giving price quotes. He had his little fanny pack on…” He couldn’t help but smile as he thought about that. “Taking money and giving change. Uncle Bobby was doin’ pretty much the same, but then he came inside to use the bathroom and take a breather. I figured I needed to go give Noah some help.”

He didn’t miss how Legend and Axel exchanged meaningful looks.

“Go on,” Axel urged.

“As I was standin’ there though, before I went out, I was thinkin’ to myself: Damn, she is… alluring.”

“Alluring?” Legend chuckled.

“Alluring. Fucking alluring. The ‘fucking’ part is probably the most important.” They all burst out laughing. When things settled down, Caspian continued.

“Somethin’ about her was… different. Unusual—in a good way. Now, here’s the catch. I’ve never asked a Black woman out in my life.” He grabbed his beer and took a hard chug this time around.

Legend cleared his throat and leaned forward. “So?” He threw up his hands. “What does that even mean?”

“It means I’ve never asked a Black woman out. What the fuck do you think it means?”

“Mothafucka, you know what I’m askin’ you…” Legend gritted his teeth.

“Settle the hell down. I find some Black women attractive. That’s not what’s unusual or questionable. I just don’t take it there. I’ve never initiated anything.”

“Why not?” Legend barked, his forehead wrinkled, and brows rutted. “If you find a mothafucka attractive, why wouldn’t you try to ask ’er out, or at least fuck her?” He waved his hands about, looking more perturbed with each passing moment. “Maybe you’re just playing with us. You mean to tell me you’ve never fucked any woman except a White one? Like, for real?”

“Right. I never have.”

“As much shit talkin’ as we’ve done about all kinds of women ’nd shit, you were not even remotely curious?”

“Curious, yeah. Beyond that? No.”

“That doesn’t make sense. You in Hot-Lanta, where some of the most beautiful Black women in this country live. Hell, women period, regardless of race, and you not once,” Legend held up his finger, “fucked one of them Black broads?”

“Scout’s honor.”

“Get your dick sucked? Played wit’ some titties?”

“None of it.”

“I call bullshit.” Axel burst out laughing at him and Legend going back and forth. “You’re a horny, disgustin’ mothafucka. It was you with all the pornos, man. You were the teen father ’tween us all! Now sure, it turned out to not be yo’ kid, but it could’ve been! We were runnin’ trains on girls, mothafucka, and wit’ all that sexy brown tail over there in Georgia…” He sucked his teeth. “Ain’t no fuckin’ way!” Legend slammed his hand on the table and shook his head in disbelief.

“Do you realize how many beautiful women I’ve seen just in my regular line of work, Legend? Color be damned. I’m definitely the pervert you make me out to be,” He chuckled. “Make no mistake about it, but it’s the God’s honest truth. I’ve never had sex with a Black woman.”

“I’ve been to Atlanta numerous times. Each and every time, pre-marriage of course, I was fuckin’. I was OD’ing on pussy there, man. They just came up to me… beautiful Black women! How the fuck you’re gonna be a heterosexual man, financially successful, and not hit no Black pussy in the ATL? I know you ain’t gay, so this shit makes no sense to me. Here you are, talkin’ about you’ve never dated a Black woman before and I’m like… what the fuck?!”

“How many times do I have to say this? I’ve never fucked, sucked, licked or dicked down a Black woman. I don’t know why you’re so damn angry about this, Legend, as if you’re a member of the Black community, or head of the NAACP.” The man opened his mouth to say something, but Axel tapped his shoulder to stop him. “It’s not because I wasn’t willing but because most folks stick to their own kind and I guess I just fell in line with that. It wasn’t a conscious decision, like I was sittin’ around thinkin’, ‘GEE! Today I’m gonna try and fuck a Black chick! Or, my goodness! Today I’m going to make a concerted effort to not approach a Black woman, even if I find ’er sexy. The fuck, man? I’m trying to tell ya somethin’ and you keep harpin’ on this, as if I’ve told you I’m in love with a vacuum, or some weird shit like that!”

He rolled his eyes, agitated with his friend who was acting far too sensitive regarding the matter. “I’m tryin’ to get to a point here and you’re wasting time on this one piece of the puzzle.”
