Silvan is standing at the counter in the dining area with a bottle of champagne, pouring it into two glasses.

I wonder if he knew I was here because Hugh told him, or because he gets some notification when I scan into the building.

He’s only wearing a pair of gray sweats, so his chest is bare. My gaze gets caught on his muscular arms and when he turns, I feel a stray butterfly flutter through my stomach.

“Welcome home,” he says, handing me a glass.

It’s easy to forget his creepy, controlling tendencies when I’m looking at him.

“Thank you,” I say, taking the glass and taking a sip.

He nods toward the white marble table at his right, my left. “I got you a present.”

I look over and find a big white box with a gray silk bow on top. “You did?”

“Mm-hmm. A new home requires a new present. Plus, I didn’t want you to worry about unpacking tonight. You can do that tomorrow when you get home from school, or I’ll have Ilona come over and do it for you if you’d like.”

“That’s okay, I’d prefer to unpack my own things.” I put my champagne flute down on the table and take the lid off the box. Inside, there’s a pair of blue pajamas made of the softest silk. I grab them and rub the fabric against my face, it’s so nice. “Oh, these are awesome.” I shoot him a playful look over my shoulder. “I thought you wanted me to sleep naked.”

“I do.” He smirks. “Those are for lounging around the apartment before bed and in the morning when you wake up. No curtains out here. Can’t have the birds checking out my girl’s ass every morning.”

I laugh because he’s so ridiculous.

I feel him come up behind me and rest my body against his, locking his arms around my waist. “I think you missed something.”

I peer into the box and see there was something hidden beneath the pajamas. My brow furrows with good-natured confusion when I see a microwavable packet of extra butter popcorn, then I move it aside and see a cloudy gray background with a brooding vampire and his clumsy beloved.

It’s a Blu-ray of Twilight.

“You didn’t!” I laugh, delighted. I grab the movie case out of the box and hug it, then I look back at him, still grinning. “You messed up, buddy. I’m gonna make you watch it with me now.”

He grins, kissing my neck. “What do you think we’re doing tonight?” He lets go of me and snatches the popcorn out of the box, then he smacks my ass before heading for the kitchen. “I’ll make the popcorn. You go put on your new pajamas.”

I can’t stop grinning as I take my gifts and head for the hall, but I stop in the kitchen to give him a hug first.

“Thank you,” I say seriously. It’s a silly gift, but it’s also thoughtful and one more example of how he’s always listening to everything I say. “I was joking about the movie, but I’m actually really excited to make you watch it.”

He smirks. “I can survive a bad movie. I just like making you smile.”

My heart tugs. “You do. A lot.” I give him one more hug, then I hand him the movie so he can get it set up, and I go to our new bedroom to get changed into something much more comfortable.

Chapter thirty-six

Sophie

The bedroom is dark when I open my eyes, but that doesn’t mean anything. Our new bedroom has the same massive windows as the living area, but there are shades in here to block the sun and make the room dark as night.

I can smell bacon cooking down the hall so I know it must be morning.

I’m surprised Silvan cooks since he’s had a staff all his life, but it’s a pleasant surprise.

I give myself one more minute to lie there with my eyes closed, soaking up the comfort of our massive king bed, then I drag myself out of it and head for the bathroom.

It’s a school day and I don’t know what our morning routine is going to look like now. I assume since Silvan and I are coming from the same place and going to the same place, we’ll probably ride together.

That reminds me, my car is still at the dorm. I’ll need to ask him about parking so I can bring it here.

I search the medicine cabinet for my new pack of birth control pills, but I don’t see them. I meant to take the first one last night, but I’m not in the habit yet, so I forgot. I’m supposed to take them at the same time every day, so I’d rather take them in the evening when I know I’ll be awake. On non-school days, I like to sleep in.
