He looks back and shoots me an enigmatic smile. “You’ll see.”

Hugh is waiting for us by the limo. I shoot him a dirty look as I climb into the car. “We need to talk about you being a major narc.”

His mustache twitches. “I’m sure I don’t know what you mean, Miss Bradwell.”

“Mm-hmm,” I murmur, making it clear I don’t believe him.

Silvan settles in and smirks. “Thanks, Hugh.”

About 15 minutes later, we drive past Boston Commons and pull up outside of a beautiful white brick building. The bottom floor houses an upscale Italian restaurant and there are five stories above it.

I assume we’re here to eat, but he said we had an appointment somewhere first.

Rather than explain himself, he hands off my birth control prescription to Hugh. “Get this taken care of while we’re here, will you.”

“Of course,” he says dutifully as I step out onto the sidewalk.

I look ahead at the man and woman walking out of the restaurant. She’s wearing heels and a tight green dress. He’s wearing a suit and shiny loafers.

I look down at my comfy outfit. “Um, I don’t think I’m dressed for this place.”

He takes my hand, leading me past the restaurant and down the small side street the side of the building faces. We stop about halfway down at a pair of double doors beneath an overhang.

He scans a card to gain access to the building, then pulls the door open and gestures for me to walk inside.

The place is very white and for a horrifying moment, I wonder if he’s brought me to a wedding dress shop. There’s a lot of empty space and gleaming floors. Light blue couches are set up in a few spots, well spaces out to give anyone sitting in them privacy.

No dresses that I can see.

There’s a woman behind a marble counter with straight brown hair in a navy blue skirt suit. Silvan takes my hand and hauls me over to her.

“We’re seeing unit 1209.”

She smiles brightly. “Of course. Your father said you’d be here.” She grabs a white envelope off the desk, slides a stapled packet of papers inside, then closes it and slides it across the smooth surface.

Silvan takes it. “Thank you.”

“You’ll want to take the elevator up to the top floor. Let me know if you have any questions.”

I do.

I wait until we’re past the receptionist on our way to the elevator before I ask any. “Your father is sending us somewhere? Should I brace myself?”

“No, it’s a nice thing,” he assures me.

I eye him as suspiciously as Hugh. “Your father isn’t nice.”

“To his family, he is. Sometimes,” he adds.

We take the elevator up to the top floor and exit into a hallway with a door on the left side and a door on the right side. The one on the right says 1209 in gleaming gold above the door.

“Here we are.”

Silvan takes a key out of the folder and uses it to open the door.

“Where is here, exactly?” I murmur as he steps inside, and I follow.

My eyes widen as I step into a beautifully decorated apartment. It’s massive with light-colored hardwood floors, marble accents, and gleaming white surfaces everywhere I look.

Off to the right is a dining area and a huge kitchen with white marble countertops and a marble island to match. There’s a wine cooler behind the table and a second sink and counter area for making drinks.

Across the open floorplan room on our right is a seating area, white leather couches with a gray fur blanket thrown over the back. A white marble table sits between the couches with an ottoman in front and a big screen TV on the wall it’s facing.

Beyond that seating area, I see a second living area with plush gray couches set up in front of a white marble fireplace, but what steals my attention is the wall of windows to my right. There are no window treatments so you can see out to the view of Boston Commons and the city skyline.

I stop in front of the window to look out at downtown, my jaw open.

Silvan comes up behind me and locks his arms around my waist. “Nice view, huh?”

“I’ll say.”

“Come on.” He takes my hand and pulls me through the living area with the gray couches toward the hallway.

There are four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, and a study. One of the bedrooms has a couple of built-in shelves, though, and he says we could make that one my study if I wanted to.

My study?

I’m hesitant as he leads me back down the hall toward the main area.

“So, do you like it?”

“Of course I like it.” I’d have to be crazy not to like it. “It’s beautiful.”

“It’s ours if we want it.”

I tear my gaze away from the view out the window to look back at him. “What?”
