Hugo took a step back from me.
“You’re not taking anything else away from my team,” he replied. “If you guys are good enough to score an international tournament, you’re good enough to get the funding.”
“Hugo, come on…” I sighed as he started to walk off. Part of me wanted to go after him, but what was the point? I knew that he wasn’t ever going to change his mind because he was so defensive when it came to his team and their success. There was no way that he was going to put his team at a disadvantage for us. For me.
I drew in a deep breath as angered heat filled my head, seeping down into the rest of my body as he disappeared from sight.
He couldn’t care less about anything but his team, thinking that they were the only hockey team at this university who could do something great, who deserved all of the attention and funding.
If he seriously thought that the women’s team wasn’t destined to do something great this season, I was going to prove him wrong.
I was going to show him who the best hockey team at Yale truly was, and I was going to start by getting that funding and winning the tournament.
Chapter 14
Hugo
Pure disappointment filled me whole as I stormed to the men’s locker room.
I couldn’t believe Leah actually tried to soften me up so that I would give her some of my team’s funding. And I couldn’t believe her team got this huge opportunity to place at the international level.
I would’ve been lying if I said I wasn’t jealous. I always wanted to play outside of the country, to face off with teams all over the world to truly test my skills. Now, I had to watch the team that complicated things for me and the guys fly off to Germany for the tournament of their lives.
We deserved that opportunity after working our asses off! We had always represented Yale the best out of the two teams. We had the best records, the most funding, the most crowd turn out, and the most awards over the years. I couldn’t be nonchalant about having this opportunity ripped right out of our hands when we deserved it the most!
Plus, we had the funding for it and didn’t need to seek it elsewhere. We had always been ready for this opportunity.
When I reached the locker room, I walked past everyone to my locker, throwing it open to dig my equipment and jersey out. I was too upset to get all chatty with the guys right now, my mind on a constant loop of running her words through my head. At first, I thought she was genuine about wanting to stop all of the fighting.
Honestly, I wouldn’t mind that. I liked her sharp tongue and her defiant attitude, but I didn’t like the tension and the stress that came with fighting with her and her team. We had fun together during the trip, and I would prefer more moments like those instead of the one we just shared outside. But if she just wanted to be friendly to take something away from me, I wasn’t going to have that.
“What’s up?” Colm asked me as he came up behind me.
I smirk in an aggravated manner as I turned to face him.
“You’ll just get pissy knowing that I fought with your BFF again,” I told him before walking past him to take a seat on one of the few benches in the locker room.
Colm whipped around.
“You talked to Leah? What did you say?” he asked as Jed came up to his side.
“The women’s team got invited to an international tournament, but if they want to go, they need more funding. She asked me to give up some of our funding for them,” I told the team.
As expected, there were mixed reactions, but that was due to Jed and Colm deciding to befriend her. They shouldn’t have done that. It was like going against their own team, but they were outnumbered anyway because the others were as irritated as me.
“It’s like they’re trying to sabotage us. They won one tournament, and they think they’re top dog now,” Anthony scoffed as he crossed his arms.
“No way we’re giving them our money. We worked hard to secure our funding!” Stephen bit out, his voice filling the room.
“This is a big deal for the university and for the athletic department. Think how much attention Yale will get if they compete well,” Jed pointed out as he put his hands up in a calming motion, trying to rein in the conversation before it grew more intense.
Mikael gave Jed a hard look.
“Everyone is going to forget about us. We risk having our own sponsors choose them over us!” he hissed as he took a step toward Jed, worry and anger seeping from his words.
