I’ve bought us matching suits and everything. Booked a fancy dinner at a hotel. I’ve even invited my parents, who love her almost as much as I do. I’ve invited Ivy and Dylan, who I’m no’ so prickly around these days. Maybe I should’ve gotten Dylan to propose—on my behalf, of course. God knows she’s awfully fond of his films . . .
As the front door slams closed, my mind slips to Ella’s studies at uni. She’s smart and determined and will get her degree. It might just take a wee while longer than initially planned. Her future career decisions are hers to make, and I’ll support her in whatever path she chooses. She’d make a wonderful teacher, no doubt. But she’s lately started to think about staying at home—being a full-time mum. She’s a nurturer, my Ella, and I’m just waiting for her to work out exactly what she wants in life, because me? I’m just happy she’s willing to let me tag along for the ride.
I’d once told her I’d worship her if she gave me the chance. I’m looking forward to spending the rest of my life doing just that.
