Witnessing a child being brought into the world is a miracle. I didn’t get to see Georgie’s birth like that, but nonetheless, it was still extraordinary.

Gigi reaches through the woman’s legs and places the baby boy on his mother’s chest as Lucia tears up, looking down at her little man. Cheers and applause are heard all around, and I feel the greatest sense of pride in Gigi. What she has done today for this family was incredible. I can’t imagine what would have happened if she wasn’t here.

“Thank you,” the new mother says as she looks up at us all. She gives a grateful smile to Gigi who looks as though she’s on cloud fucking nine.

Tablecloths and towels are tossed around, and the new parents go about cleaning him off when the ambulance finally arrives. Gigi jumps up off the ground and talks to the paramedic, who by the looks of it, is a friend of hers.

The woman is checked over by the paramedics before she’s moved into the ambulance with her new baby and husband, leaving us all behind. Gigi smiles, but the rest of us just gape in shock. The second the ambulance disappears around the corner, I take Gigi by the hand and pull her into my arms, not giving a shit about the state of her clothes. “You were amazing,” I say as I press my lips against hers.

She looks up at me, quickly searching my eyes to make sure I’m okay before finally deciding she’s happy with what she sees. “That was incredible,” she tells me. “I absolutely love it, bringing life into the world. It’s the best feeling you’ll ever know.”

“I’ll place it right behind loving you and Georgie,” I murmur.

She grins up at me before rolling her eyes, but nonetheless, she melts into my chest. “You’re so cheesy.”

“You love it.”

“I do,” she tells me. “I can’t wait to get back to work on Monday.”

“I know,” I laugh, my hand dangerously low on her back. “You tell me three times every day.”

With that, I lead her back into the restaurant where my family instantly commends her for everything she’s done, but Logan is as white as a fucking ghost as he sits beside his wife silently, looking as though he’s about to pass out.

Sitting back with Georgie in my lap, I watch proudly as Gigi and the girls talk all about it, going over everything and telling them how incredible it was when she turns back to me, her eyes sparkling with undeniable joy.

Reaching out, I take her hand, seeing my whole future right there by my side. “I love you,” I tell her, bringing her hand to my lips and pressing a gentle kiss just above her knuckles, hoping like fuck the paramedics gave her the good shit to clean her hands with.

Gigi’s face flames as she notices the eyes of my whole family on us, but despite the attention, she can’t help but say it back.

Chapter 25

GIGI

Walking around the maternity ward, I quickly check on my patients one last time before heading over to Sue to let her know I’m done for the day. She lets out a relieved sigh as I hand her my paperwork and gives me a fond smile. “It’s so good to have you back, Gigi,” she says, taking the papers from me.

“Thanks, I’ve missed it so much,” I tell her. “It was only six weeks, but it felt like a lifetime.”

“I know, honey,” she says, giving me a sad smile and reaching out to squeeze my hand. “I’m just happy to have someone back on this floor who I don’t need to constantly be chasing.”

I give her a big smile before saying goodnight and heading out to grab my things, feeling a little off this afternoon after overhearing a few nurses gossiping about the shooting, talking about how the shooter was a father of a little girl who died during surgery the week before. He’d been struggling mentally with the loss and had gotten it in his head that the hospital was keeping her from him.

I shook it off, but the thoughts stuck with me right through my shift.

I’ve been back at work for just over a week, and for the most part, it’s been amazing. I’ve always had a fire within me when I work, but since being back, that fire has only gotten stronger. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve missed it so much since being off or because I’m just a happier person since having Sean in my life and finding this intense, beautiful love.

Fuck, I’m so head over heels in love with him.

Letting out a lovesick sigh, I collapse onto the couch in the nurses’ lounge, my phone in hand. My feet are aching, but I swear, I’d happily stick around and do the night shift if I was asked.
