I didn’t even care. Camilla was amazing. She was gorgeous and sexy in a completely unexpected way. But that was only part of what I was so wrapped up in about her. Camilla was smart, and we could talk about computers for hours. She understood my love of the machines and the things I wanted to talk about, and I loved listening to her talk about her excitement at teaching the students at the high school and watching them develop new appreciation for computers.

She was also funny, with a sharp wit and sassy tongue that could leave me in stitches with just a few words or a perfectly timed look.

But she was also sweet and kind, truly caring about other people. She wasn’t demanding or selfish, and I never felt like she cared about things like social status or money. That alone set her aside from a lot of the women who crossed my path and instantly thought owning a vineyard came with swimming pools full of cash to just throw around.

She was truly incredible, and a few weeks after that first date, I knew for certain I was falling for her. That was why my plan for that week’s Friday date night was going to be a little different.

“Do you know where I first saw you?” I asked as I unwrapped the sandwich I’d brought to the high school so I could have lunch with her.

Camilla gave me a strange look over the little plastic cup of tuna salad she was spooning over a bed of greens. It was one of her favorite lunches, and the fact that I could even stand sitting at the same table with it was a testament to how much I wanted to spend time with her. That alone should tell anybody who knew me how I was feeling about this woman.

“Um… here? When I was sitting with Mr. Proctor and you came to see him,” she said.

She set the cup down and picked up her fork to start eating. I shook my head.

“I’d already seen you before that,” I said.

“Really? When? Here at the school?”

“No. Not then.”

I smiled, but she didn’t look as amused. She swirled the end of her fork around like she was indicating my face as she chewed.

“I know you probably think that you’re being cute and playful right now, but you kind of have a whole ‘Play Misty For Me’ thing going on,” she said.

I laughed. “Fair enough. Alright, the first time I saw you was actually at the bar. You were sitting with the same girl you were with the night I saw you there and came over to say hello.”

“Fiona,” she said, nodding. “When was this?”

“Just before I officially met you here,” I said. “I looked across the bar and saw you, and you immediately got my attention. I couldn’t keep my eyes off you for the rest of the night. Until you disappeared. I hadn’t even gotten a chance to talk to you or anything. Then I came to see Mr. Proctor, and here you were.”

She smiled. “I like that.”

“Me too. So, I was thinking for our date tonight we should go back there. I’d like you to meet a couple of my best friends. And I’d like to really meet Fiona,” I said. “I know it isn’t exactly a date for just the two of us, but…”

“It sounds like fun,” she said. “I’d really like for you to get to know Fiona.”

I grinned, having to stop myself from leaning over and kissing her. I really didn’t need the students having lunch just a few yards away to see that. She’d never hear the end of it.

Before Camilla had to head back to the classroom, we made plans to meet up with everybody at the bar later that night. I gave her a quick kiss on the cheek when I didn’t think anybody was looking and headed back to the vineyard feeling excited about the night to come.

That night I picked Camilla up, and we went to the bar. I glanced around when we got inside, trying to find any of the people we were meeting, but Camilla didn’t need to search. She made a beeline for the bar, and as we approached, I saw Fiona perched on one of the stools.

She leaned across the polished wood surface, flirting with Gus, the bartender.

“They’ve been dating for a few weeks now,” Camilla explained. “Fiona has been after him for a good long time, and she finally wore him down.”

I laughed. Gus was a friend of mine, and I’d heard he was seeing someone, but I didn’t realize it was Camilla’s best friend. At first glance, the pair definitely seemed like an odd match, but they were also smiling at each other happily and making little flirty comments to each other.
