When I don’t answer him quick enough, he glares my way. “Great, so should I tell my dad we need to start looking for a new publicist now?”

A gasp from behind me has me turning around. Kaylee is standing in the doorway, a pained expression written all over her face.

“You’re really firing me?” she asks softly.

“You told her she’s fired?” Camden barks. “What the hell, man?”

“I thought you were joking.” Tears fill her eyes, and before I can stop her, she runs out of the room.

“Dammit!” I’m about to go after her when Jill pops inside to let us know we have to go on. “I need to find Kaylee.”

“Not now, you don’t,” she says. “You need to get your butts on the stage in two minutes.”

I consider ignoring her and going after Kaylee, but I can’t let the guys down. She can’t go anywhere right now anyway, so I know she’ll still be here after the show. She might be upset, but she takes her job seriously, and she wouldn’t flake on her duties—even if she does think she’s been fired.

“What the hell were you thinking firing her?” Camden says as we walk down the hall leading to the stage.

“I didn’t fire her... well, not seriously.” I wave him off, not wanting to explain it all right now. We have a show to get through, and the last thing I need is to fuck up because Kaylee is all up in my headspace.

The venue is dark so we can get situated, and a few minutes later, the lights come down on us. The crowd screams in excitement when Camden speaks, and then Gage starts in on the drums. The next couple of hours fly by, one song after the next, but the entire time, I can’t get Kaylee off my mind and the hurt look on her face when she thought I’d actually fired her. I might be a dick, but I wouldn’t do that to her. Sure, I mentioned I didn’t want her on the tour, but that was before the past couple of nights. And even when I made the comments before, I never acted on them. It was just me talking shit out of hurt and anger.

The misunderstanding reminds me that despite how perfectly I fit inside her, we haven’t been around each other for several years. We’ve both grown up and changed. While we know each other, we also don’t. And I have to figure out what I want because the last thing I want to do is hurt Kaylee. She might’ve hurt me, but I wouldn’t do it back just to spite her. I meant what I said. I love her. I always have and always will.

But a part of me is still pissed at what she did, so I need to figure out if I can let that go and whether we have a chance at a future. Hell, I don’t even know what she wants. Maybe she just needed a good dicking, and now that she’s gotten it, she’s done with me. The thought pisses me off. She was upset about the possibility of her being fired, but she hasn’t once asked about where we stand.

By the time Cam is thanking Atlanta for being amazing, I’ve worked myself up and am desperate to find Kaylee. Without waiting for the guys, I push past the crew in search of her. I don’t find her in the dressing room or anywhere backstage. Figuring she must be on the bus, I head outside, but before I get there, I find her talking to Jill. Her eyes meet mine, and I’m about to drag her somewhere private, but she plasters a smile on her face and says, “Ready for the meet and greet?” Dammit, I forgot about that.

“We need to talk.”

“We need to get you to where the fans will be waiting shortly.”

“We have time,” I argue. “It always takes a good half hour.”

“Then you should probably use that time to change your shirt.”

Without waiting for me to respond, she turns on her heel and leaves me standing there stunned silent. So it’s going to be like that? Fine. I’ll wait until we’re done. Then I’ll lock her ass in her hotel room until she’s ready to talk.

Since I’ve already missed a couple of the meet and greets recently, when I let my emotions get the best of me, the last thing I want to do is miss more of them. So I go through it with a smile stuck on my face. The fans pay good money to meet us. They’re the reason we get to do what we love and are able to make a damn good living at it.

But the second it’s over, I’m out the door and off to find Kaylee. Since I was in her room last night, I already have a key. I storm inside and find her in bed, acting like she’s already asleep.
