“Can you for once not be rational?” I sassed. “You’re a great guy. He should be happy that my best friend is such an amazing person.”

“Well, you remind him often enough.”

“That’s because I’m the only one who cares.”

“I care about you, and that’s all that matters to me.”

“That’s really sad.” I disappointingly nodded. “You should be pissed.”

“And what’s that going to solve, huh?”

“I don’t know, but it’s better than not saying anything.”

“What exactly am I supposed to say? He’s your father. I’m not going to stir the pot when you do that enough for us both.”

“Whatever.” I rolled my eyes.

“He just wants what’s best for you.”

“Stop saying that! You’re just making excuses for him.”

“Livvy—”

Unable to bite my tongue, I confessed, “He wants me to go to Stanford University, Ethan. As in California. As in a five-hour plane ride. As in a forty-hour car ride from here. As in a whole-ass other coast away.”

He jerked back. This was the first time I admitted this to him.

“Now that I got your attention,” I mocked. “Why do you think that is?”

He was silent for a minute. It was obvious he was trying to gather his thoughts.

Shaking it off, he insisted, “It’s a top school.”

“Oh, come on!” I reprimanded. “You know it’s because that college is the farthest away from you.”

“Livvy, you don’t know that.”

“Trust me, I do. It doesn’t matter how many scholarships you get. It won’t matter. The tuition for that university is insane, and we both know you can’t afford insane.”

He didn’t reply how I wanted him to. Instead, he asked, “What do you want me to say?”

Triggering me…

To snap.

Ethan

“Why do you ask when you already know?”

“That’s it.” I gripped her thigh, tickling the shit out of her.

I was over her attitude. She instantly whipped around to no avail and finally gave up, laughing too hard to fight. I laughed too. Her laughter was always contagious. I fell over, onto her petite frame. It was only then I realized the compromising position we were suddenly in, and by the look in her eyes, she did too. I was now lying on top of her.

I smiled, looking down at her while she gazed up at me with an abrupt expression I couldn’t quite read. There was so much emotion behind her eyes. I only ever saw it one other time, in this very same spot where we experienced our first kiss together. I pulled her hair away from her face, pinning it back behind her ears.

My hand caressed the side of her cheek, and I fucking knew I shouldn’t be doing this, but I couldn’t help myself. I grabbed the back of her neck, bringing her toward me and she came effortlessly. Her lips were just as I remembered, if not better. They tasted of honey-flavored lip gloss, and it stirred my dick in ways that now the mere smell of it would get me hard.

This was crazy.

This was my best friend.

This was Livvy.

What the hell is happening?

I sought out her tongue before she had the chance to find mine, needing to taste her, making her moan in my mouth. Both my hands found the sides of her face, and her hands found my hair, pulling at it. I took in the feel of her pouty lips while framing her face that I adored so fucking much before my hands began sliding down her body.

Fuck, she feels good.

Her wet dress had hiked up, exposing her thighs and silky smooth skin.

I needed to stop.

We needed to stop…

But I wanted nothing more than to keep going. Livvy had been the only girl I’d ever kissed, and I knew it was the same for her when it came to me. Our lips devoured each other as if we were both making a memory. I wish I could describe the intensity I felt with her in my arms. Only I couldn’t even do it justice. I couldn’t put into words what I felt in my heart.

What had always been there, to begin with.

It overpowered me. This was the second time I let it take control, and a huge part of me wanted to throw caution to the wind and just go with it.

I didn’t.

I couldn’t.

I enjoyed the sensation of her lips against mine one last time before I pulled away, causing her to whimper at the loss.

“Elizabeth,” I breathed out, inches away from her mouth. My forehead set on hers, my hands holding the sides of her face.

She immediately opened her eyes. They appeared dark and dilated. I couldn’t remember the last time I called her by her full name.

“Ethan,” she panted back, luring me in again.

I softly pecked her lips, rubbing mine back and forth on hers.

“Please,” she huskily pleaded, her tone soft and torn.

What is she asking for?

Does she even know?

“What do you—”

Her cell phone rang, cutting me off. We jumped at the sound, and I flew off her as she reached for her backpack to grab it.
