“Right? Just think about it.” She wiggled her eyebrows. “Soon, we’ll be living in our own places, and we can have sleepovers when we visit each other.”

The airiness in the room instantly shifted into unanswered questions we’d yet to ask one another. Since prom, we were literally living our best lives together. For the first time, we kissed, held hands, and touched each other whenever we wanted. The list was endless of all the ways we explored this new world of sex between us.

Not only were we both virgins to begin with but it only added to the excitement of trying out all these new positions and places we could together. Granted, it was just two months since we started this new sexual dynamic, but that didn’t matter. We’d probably had sex at least a hundred times. Ethan spent more time inside me than not.

I couldn’t tell you how much fun it was. Being able to be free in this way was everything. We went from friends to lovers like it was the easiest thing in the entire world.

It felt natural.

Simple.

Except summer was almost over. Soon, we’d be heading in different directions. Miles and hours apart. A whole other life. I tried not to think about the looming end of us.

This has to end, right?

We hadn’t spoken about the future or where we went from there. We would forever be best friends. That wasn’t the issue. The main question was…

Can we be more?

Unable to hold it in any longer, I blurted, “Ethan, what are we doing?”

“Well, currently, you’re naked on top of me.”

I chuckled. “You know what I mean.”

“Livvy, if you want to have a serious conversation, then I’m going to need you to put some clothes on because all I can focus on right now is how much I want to bend you over the bed and fuck you doggy style.”

“They’re just boobs. You’re such a guy.” I grabbed the sheet, covering myself. “Better?”

“Hardly. Your wet pussy is still on my hard cock.”

I shook my head. “Can you please focus for five minutes?”

“As much as it pains me to say this, I’m going to need you to get off me. I can’t think straight with you sitting on me naked. The white sheet only makes you sexier. You’re like a present I want to unwrap.”

“Oh my God!” I jumped off, but right before I could step off the bed. He grabbed the back of my neck and kissed me like we weren’t about to have the inevitable discussion.

“You’re so fucking gorgeous,” he breathed out against my lips.

“You always know the right things to say.”

“I only speak the truth.” With that, he let me go.

I grabbed his hoodie from the floor, throwing it on with my panties next, and then turned around to look at him.

“Is this more of what you had in mind?”

“Not really, but it’ll do.”

After he slid his gym shorts on, he sat against the headboard while I sat on the edge of the bed.

“Why so far away?”

“If I go near you, then one thing leads to another, and you know… you’re insatiable.”

“Only when it comes to you.”

With a smile, I repeated, “What are we doing?”

“In reference to what?”

I pointed back and forth between us. “To this.”

“We’re best friends.”

“I know that, but then we’re just what? Best friends with benefits?”

“Isn’t that what you wanted?”

“Yeah…”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“So then this is just a summer fling?”

“Livvy, you’re far from a fling or even just a fuck. I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“I know. What happens after this summer?”

“You move to California.”

“Right…” I bowed my head. “And when you visit or when I do, are we just going to pick up where we left off?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“Yeah,” I agreed, nodding. “I don’t know either.”

“Is that what you want? To pick up where we left off?”

“Do you?”

“Livvy, I just want you in my life, and I’ll take you in whatever way I can.”

I nodded again. “Me too, but does that mean… we’re just going to go back to being best friends, and this was just a phase in our friendship?”

“You’ll never just be a phase for me. You’ll always be my girl, regardless of where life takes us.”

“As in girlfriend?”

His eyebrows tightly pinched together, and it was enough for me to completely retreat.

“Never mind.” I abruptly stood. “Forget I said anything.”

Before I could walk away, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward him. He peered deep into my eyes once he had my face between his hands.

“I can’t just put a label on you, Livvy. Any more than I can just put a label on us. You’re so much more than any word could ever explain what you mean to me. Girlfriend doesn’t begin to describe who you are in my life. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

“I think I do.”
