River nods to Brett. “Thanks, man. That’s exactly what I need to do.”
River and Brett leave the suite, and I follow them to the end of the hallway to the office that has a landline.
“You want me to stay?” Brett asks River.
River nods. “Yeah.”
Brett grips his shoulder, and an understanding passes between my two friends. Brett and River are day and night, but they have a closeness that the rest of us don’t share. I leave the room while they make the call.
Only to run right into Heather.
EPISODE 113
FREUDIAN FLIP
Ariel
June takes a sip of water. “Where could Heather be? This hot tub thing was her idea.”
The warm water bubbles around my feet. I can’t actually get into the tub because of the bandage on my leg. My hair is up in a messy bun, and I’m wishing I had a cocktail. I didn’t drink much wine at dinner, and even though I like all these ladies—though the jury’s still out on Misty, to my right—I still don’t quite know what to say to them when we’re together.
June looks perfect, of course, as she always does. Perfect face with perfect nose and perfect cheekbones. Perfect-sized boobs bobbing on the surface of the water. Perfect hair in a perfect bun with that effortless look I can never get right. Perfect lips that she used to kiss Alex… Suck his cock…
“I don’t know,” I reply, though I wouldn’t be surprised if Heather’s with Sebastian.
Despite the great sex he and I had this morning in his suite, I get the feeling Heather is his first choice. Sure, he finger-banged me in the bathroom, but we got interrupted, and he also asked if I’d be interested in a threesome with Heather.
I should have just said “hell, no!” Not after the threesome with June and Alex went all wrong. Alex and I connected on our date—at least I thought we did—but once he saw June naked, the two of them ended up making out after I left.
I’m pretty sure I’m not cut out for this. Maybe I’m just too young to be so nonchalant about everything. Maybe I’m not the kind of person who can sleep around and not have it mean anything. I lost a piece of my heart to Brett the first night, another piece to Alex the second, and a third to Sebastian this morning. And tonight, during dinner?
I got kind of focused on River, who hasn’t given me the time of day yet.
I keep hearing Mama’s voice in my head. Still waters run deep.
Something about that cowboy makes my blood start to heat.
“I don’t know either.” Misty closes her eyes and breathes in the steam.
“I have to tell you, Misty,” June says. “Those greens were fabulous.”
Misty opens her eyes and gives June a radiant smile. “Thank you. Katie was a great teacher. I didn’t think we had a chance of winning.”
“Do you know who voted for you?” I ask.
“I voted for us,” Misty laughs. “And I assume Emily did. And Katie. But after that, I have no idea.”
I voted for the appetizer, of course—the dish Sebastian and I worked on. I figured we had as good a chance as anybody else, and maybe we’d get some pity votes because of my injury.
Nope.
“I have to admit I voted for the entrée,” June says. “I figured we’d all vote for ourselves, so it would really be up to the chefs.”
“You didn’t think they’d vote for themselves?” I ask.
“Clearly they didn’t,” June replies. “They must have all voted for the greens. Especially after Chef Pierre kept telling everyone not to judge the dishes against each other. How were we supposed to not judge them against each other?” She shakes her head with a laugh.
“Did you like working with River?” I ask, genuinely curious.
June nods. “There’s something about him. Even though he was in kind of a mood tonight.”
Misty rolls her eyes. “Seems he’s always in a mood.”
“Is that why you picked Brett?” I ask. “Because he’s not moody like River?”
“I have my reasons for choosing Brett,” she says, looking away.
Okay. Clearly she’s done talking about that. I haven’t forgotten that she told Sienna the first night that she was going to marry River, but if she couldn’t have him, Alex was her second choice.
So why the hell did she choose Brett for her private date?
Is she just that fickle? Or is she trying to manipulate something? I suppose it’s possible that she simply changed her mind and has taken her focus off River. But who changes their mind in forty-eight hours?
Except for me, of course. I can’t seem to stay focused on one guy.
But back to Misty. Why is a hotel heiress trying to marry a billionaire anyway? Poor Emily had to work with her today. I should leave the tub and find Emily. She’ll tell me what’s going on.
