She didn’t even know Diago. She had to rely on his word and trust he wouldn’t back out of their agreement. Vanessa glanced down at the ring. She had expected to feel panic at being married to him, but she didn’t. This wasn’t scary or terrifying. This felt right.

Diago shook hands with the priest before approaching.

“It’s time for us to go,” Diago said.

Susan sighed. “I would ask for a small reception, but I know time is precious.” She gave her another hug. “I’m so happy for the two of you, and until we see each other again, enjoy one another.”

With that Susan turned on her heel and left. Before she went, she put the flowers she had been holding in the trash and pulled on a pair of sunglasses, escaping into the day.

Vanessa turned toward Diago questioningly.

“She knows how to be discreet,” he said.

“Oh. Should I toss my flowers into the trash?”

“No, you can keep them.”

Diago was moving them toward the back entrance, and she was surprised to see a car already waiting for them.

No one else was there, and he rounded the car to open it for her. She thanked him, sliding inside, then waited for him to climb behind the wheel. The windows were slightly blacked out. People would struggle to make out who was in the car.

Within seconds, Diago had the car purring to life, the air conditioner on, and they were on the road heading toward his home. She held onto the flowers—roses—which were her favorite. Neither of them spoke.

Diago had told her they were not going to have sex until they were married. Now that they were married, would it happen today? Tonight? They hadn’t exactly had the time to talk. In the last three weeks she had barely seen him. She’d expected him to call off the wedding, but he hadn’t done that, which surprised her.

Time ticked by, and she tried not to look at him.

She knew it shouldn’t bother her. The first time was going to be … painful. There was no getting away from that. She nibbled the bottom of her lip and waited.

They arrived at his home. He typed in the code, pressed his finger, and the gates opened. The moment they passed through the gates and he stopped, waiting for them to close, Vanessa finally felt like she could relax.

How had this happened? Diago was a stranger, and yet she felt safer in his home, in his company, than she ever had at her childhood home.

Pushing all thoughts of the past to the back of her mind, she instead focused on the now, on her life with Diago.

He drove up toward the main front door, and she waited for him to turn the ignition off and round the vehicle, coming toward her. This time, she couldn’t keep her gaze away from him. He was so intriguing. He wore a tuxedo and looked so handsome.

What would it be like to have those arms around her, bringing her pleasure, making her ache and scream, begging him for more? She felt an answering pulse between her thighs. Vanessa had never felt this way before around a man.

There had been a time when Diago had held her, but she couldn’t remember him saving her. Her memories of that moment were blurred from the pain and hallucinations. Since he had told her the truth, she had wondered if he’d been the angel she thought she had seen. When she came to, clearheaded, she figured it was the infection messing with her mind.

Diago certainly was no angel.

He opened the door and held out his hand for her to take, which she did. They walked up the small steps and went to his front door. Her heart raced as excitement rushed through her.

They stepped into his home, and he closed the door, the lock flicking back into place. She didn’t need him to tell her of the security he had around his house. Diago’s home was the safest place to be.

She took a few steps away from him, but when he cleared his throat, she stopped.

“Take the dress off,” Diago said.

She turned toward him. “You don’t want me to go to my room or your room?”

“No, I want that dress off. Now!” His voice was hard, deep, commanding, and so sexy.

She knew she should feel offended, but instead she felt aroused.

Vanessa put the flowers down on the floor and then grabbed the bottom of the dress and slid it up over her head. She had never been trained in the art of seduction or even teasing. She didn’t have a clue what she was doing.

The white lingerie she wore was sheer lace, and sexy. There was no point in her even wearing them, as he would be able to see right through them.

She dropped the dress onto the floor, and it was difficult for her to not fight the urge to cover herself. Years of being told how ugly she was spilled through her mind like toxic waste.
