We make our way to the roleplay room and enter without knocking.

Everyone inside jumps when we barge in, but Brandon and Sugar are nowhere to be found.

I leave the room and that’s when I see them, standing not too far away.

I charge at Brandon.

“You motherfucker,” I shout before connecting my fist to his jaw. “How could you kill them?” I raise my fist to hit him again, but Ledger holds me back.

“Let the cops deal with him,” Ledger says as I try to break free from his hold.

“Did you kill them?” Roman says, kicking Brandon while he’s down.

Chaos ensues with Sugar screaming at the top of her lungs. Everyone in the VIP room rushes out, wanting a piece of the action.

“Call 9-1-1,” someone yells over the ruckus.

The only thing I’m thinking about is ending Brandon’s life like he did the Greedy Girls.

“You want me to say your name?” I yell at him. “Brandon?”

Brandon opens his bruised and bloodied eyes. “What are you talking about?”

“You killing my girls. You fucking asshole. I hope you rot in hell,” I shout.

Ledger’s still holding me back so I can’t kill Brandon right here and now.

After a few minutes, Ledger calms me down and I’m able to deal with the cops rushing onto the scene.

“He’s the Greedy Girl murderer,” Roman says to the cops.

Adams and Peters both rush to Brandon first, slapping cuffs on him until they can figure out what’s going on.

Guy makes his way over to me. “I should take you downtown for beating the fuck out of him.” He points to Brandon.

“You could. But he’s the murderer.”

“How do you know that?” Guy’s radio on his shoulder chirps and he speaks into it asking for an ambulance. “You’re all going to the station until we can sort this mess out.”

“Don’t forget her.” I nod toward Sugar. “She’s guilty of this too.”

Within thirty minutes, I’m sitting downtown in a small room with one brown table and two chairs. I sit in one, waiting for a detective to come through the door.

Will it be Chloe?

Is she even here?

I focus on my bloody hand. It felt so good punching that motherfucker. The fact I’ve had him so close to me for so long and never had any clue he was running a prostitution ring right under my nose makes me livid.

A gray-haired man steps through the door. “Mr. Huxley,” he says. “I just need to get your official statement.”

“Where’s Chloe?”

The man’s face scrunches in confusion. “Chloe?”

“Yes. Is she here?”

The man takes a deep breath. I recognize him as the detective who questioned me at Club Greed, but I can’t remember his name.

“I’m Finn Grant. I’m Chloe’s partner. Homicide dismissed her from the case once she told us she’d been compromised.”

“Where is she?” I ask again.

“I’m guessing she went home.”

“The Captain didn’t look kindly on the fact that she told you some vital information and you took matters into your own hands. We’re questioning Brandon now. So, be happy we found the one responsible.”

I should feel ecstatic they’ve got Brandon, but I only feel terrible for what has happened with Chloe. I want to see her.

After I give my official statement, I leave the station and head toward Chloe’s house.

It’s time I told her how I really feel about her.

Chapter 41

Chloe

“Thanks for letting me know,” I say into my phone, with as much joy as I can muster. “I’ll talk to you later, Finn.”

Finn says goodbye and hangs up.

They arrested Brandon and Sugar. The details are still coming together, but it’s finally over. Crazy how everything turned out. I should be thrilled, but I’m not.

Mainly because I’m sitting here pregnant with no clue how to tell the baby’s father. It’s pretty clear Devereaux wants nothing to do with me.

I mean, I’m a detective.

It could never work out.

Right?

I move through my house like a stranger. It no longer feels like home after living with Devereaux. The dry erase board is still in my living room, full of the pictures from the case.

I need to clean up this mess. Get back to my real life.

My phone rings as I walk over to the board.

“Are you doing ok?” my sister’s voice says.

“Yeah, I’m fine.”

Even through the phone, I can tell she doesn’t believe me. “Chloe, have you spoken to him?”

I hang my head. “There’s no point. I don’t need him to tell me it was all an illusion. I mean, that’s not my life.”

“Why not?”

“Because the man’s got more money than God. He’d never want me.”

“He did want you,” Ashley reminds me.

“No, he only wanted the version of me that I showed him. He only ever truly wanted Swan.”

Ashley’s quiet for a moment, and I have to check the phone to make sure I haven’t dropped the call.

“It’s over,” I say when I can’t handle the silence.

“What are you going to do about the baby?” she asks.
