He grabbed her sore wrist and pulled her back. She let out a pained cry. The world swimming around her as nausea bubbled in her stomach.

“Greer? What’s wrong?” Hack said urgently. “Fuck! I don’t care who you are. If you don’t stop hurting her, I’m going to end you.”

Cash let go of her, eyeing her. “Greer?”

“Get out of my way,” Hack demanded.

“Easy,” Cash snapped. “She’s probably just scratched herself. She’s always getting hurt. It’s never serious.”

Ouch.

That hurt as much as the pain in her wrist. More. She bent over, trying to convince herself that puking over her shoes was not a good idea.

“Never serious? How the fuck do you know it’s not serious? She just screamed in pain. Get out of my way.”

Uh-oh. Hack was mad.

“Greer? Hey, can you look at me, Tater Tot?” Hack asked.

“Greer, tell this asshole you’re not really hurt. You aren’t, right? Fuck.”

She could hear how Cash was freaking out and knew she needed to say something. Breathing in deep, she stood up.

“I’m good. I’m fine.”

“Really? You’re fine?” Hack asked skeptically. “That’s why you just screamed and nearly passed out?”

“I didn’t nearly pass out,” she said. “I nearly vomited. There’s a difference.”

“Oh, but you’re fine,” Hack said with a hint of sarcasm.

“There’s nothing worse than a man who throws your words back in your face,” she pointed out.

“Well, regardless of whether you nearly passed out or vomited, there is obviously something wrong with your wrist. Are your jeans ripped? Did something happen to you?” Hack asked in a tight voice.

“Greer?” Cash asked, obviously noticing what Hack had. “Did someone hurt you?”

Well. Shit.

She had a feeling they were both going to be upset when she told them what happened.

“I’m fine. I just tripped and fell over. I must have landed funny on my wrist.” She noticed that someone was walking out of the house opposite them.

“How the fuck did you trip and fall over?” Hack asked her, moving his gaze over her.

She really wanted to throw herself into his arms and let him take care of this entire mess.

But she wasn’t his problem.

“Shit,” she muttered. “We need to go inside.”

“Why? What’s wrong?” Cash stiffened, looking around. He reached his hand back behind him. “What can you see?”

“Um, just the neighbor walking his dog,” she told him, staring at him incredulously. “Are you . . . are you reaching for a gun?”

Hack slid between her and Cash, very obviously protecting her.

From her brother!

Fuck. Could this night get any worse?

25

What was the saying?

If looks could kill . . . yeah, well, he wouldn’t just be dead, he’d be writhing on the ground in agony.

Cash Savage wasn’t happy with him getting between him and his sister.

Thing was . . . Hack wasn’t fucking happy with Cash. At. All.

Greer was injured.

And he’d hurt her.

Okay . . . maybe he hadn’t known that she’d injured her wrist when he’d grabbed her. But Hack wasn’t in an understanding mood.

And he didn’t like that at the first hint that there might be trouble, Cash had reached for a gun.

And that meant that he was either in trouble.

Or he’d been living a life where it was shoot or be shot.

Either way, Hack wasn’t sure that he wanted this guy around Greer.

Brother or not.

Like you have a say in what she does.

He hadn’t been able to stop thinking of her since he’d left her.

It was killing him, not being near her, not knowing if she was all right, if she needed him.

And it had only been forty-eight hours since he’d seen her.

This was ridiculous. But he’d been so happy that she’d called him. Then terrified when he’d answered and she hadn’t said anything.

She’d be proud of how fast he rode to get here. His heart was still racing.

“Get away from my sister. Now,” Cash demanded.

Hack stood his ground. This wasn’t the first armed guy he’d faced down. Likely wouldn’t be the last.

“Greer is injured and standing out in the dark and cold. The neighbors are likely calling the cops right now. And you’re standing there, reaching for a fucking gun? No, not happening. You do not pull a gun when your sister is around unless you are certain there is a threat.”

If this asshole wasn’t Greer and Sav’s brother, he’d be fucking dead.

“How dare you fucking pull a gun with your sister close.”

“I am protecting her. She is my sister.”

“Who you left for years,” he pointed out.

A throat clearing had them both turning to look down at Greer, who stepped to the side of Hack so she could see them both.

“Greer, get behind me. Now.” Anger ran through him. What was she thinking?

If he put her behind him, he expected her to stay there.

“Why? So you two can start beating your chests and pee on me to claim me?”

“Greer,” Cash groaned. “That’s disgusting.”

She sniffed. “I’m not some prize to fight over. The two of you need to quit it. Far as I can see, you’re both alike.”
