“I do,” he says, smiling down at me. We stop walking, and I look around. We are standing in front of the Grand Pinnacle Hotel, the most exclusive hotel in all of New York. It costs three thousand plus dollars a night for the basic room.

“Your Majesty, we have arrived back at the hotel. I can take Miss Beaufort to the sitting room while you dress for dinner,” the guard with the earpiece says, coming close to George.

“No.” His one-word answer sounds like it shouldn’t be refuted. I guess I am going up to his room… If I go up to his room, I know I’m going to sleep with him, if that’s what he’s after, of course. Then my mind goes a little crazy with worry… Did I go to the gym today on lunch today? I usually do, but for some freaking reason, I can’t remember shit about my day except for meeting him. I give myself a discreet sniff and can only smell my Gucci Guilty perfume. Okay, calm down, Ashlee. You can do this, whatever this is.

“Sire?” the guard questions, clearly perplexed. It gives me a little bit of hope that this isn’t something that he does often.

“She will accompany me upstairs, Guy.”

“To your rooms, without us?” The anger and shock in the guard's voice are evident. Okay, I think I should defuse this situation.

“Guy? Is that your name?” I ask.

“Forgive me, ma’am. My name is Guy Desmond, Captain of the Royal Guard,” he says, bowing to me.

“Guy, would searching me make you feel better?” I ask, stepping away from the king.

“It would,” he says, stepping toward me. I hand my briefcase and purse to the other guard, who immediately starts going through them. I cringe when I remember that I have a clean pair of panties tucked into my purse for emergencies. “This is Flint.” Thankfully, he doesn’t say anything about them; he just performs a perfunctory and professional search.

“Hello, Flint,” I say as I spread my arms and legs wide as I do at the airport when being searched by a TSA agent. He just grunts, making me smile. Guy begins a perfunctory search of my body but stills with his hands on my hips when George growls. Like actually growls.

“I…uh… don’t have any weapons, though I might have some tweezers in my makeup bag.”

“She can keep her damn tweezers, Guy. She won’t kill me; even if she tried, she certainly wouldn’t succeed with a pair of tweezers.” Sandrine laughs from somewhere behind Flint.

“She hasn’t been vetted, Your Majesty,” Flint grumbles.

“George,” I say, setting my hand on his arm again. “Let the man do his job. It will give everyone some peace of mind. You literally found me on the street. I could be anyone, though I’d never do anything to hurt you. Flint can take my driver’s license and social security card from my wallet and run a check on me. I’m sure you can do it pretty instantly, right?”

“Yes, ma’am,” Flint says.

“Please continue, Guy,” I say, standing still for the guard. By the time he completes his search, George is completely pissed. His anger is radiating off of him in waves.

“Come,” he says, taking my hand and all but dragging me into the hotel.

“Thank you,” I say to the doorman who opened the door for us. “Please slow down.” I yank back on my arm. He doesn’t stop until we are in the already open elevator. We are alone inside of it. He presses the P button, and I don’t even want to think about how much the penthouse costs per night. His free hand is clenched into a fist, so I take it in my other hand. In for a penny… “Hey, what was that all about?” He looks at me with wide eyes.

“I didn’t like him touching you. I wanted to kill him.” The venom in his voice surprises me… and turns me on. I knew he was something special before I even met him, but now I know that I’m going to have a hard leaving when this is over.

“George… he really was just doing his job, which, if you recall, is to keep you safe.”

“I know, but I still didn’t like it.”

“Why do you think that is?” I whisper, the air in the elevator charging as we climb up to the hotel's top floor.

He doesn’t reply. Instead, his lips land on mine, and I freeze. His tongue coaxes my mouth open, and I let him in. Aerosmith's Love In An Elevator plays in my mind when the kiss turns into something more. I allow it, getting more and more turned on that someone could be watching us through what I'm sure is a security camera. He kneels before me, making me feel like a goddess. Running his fingers slowly, deliberately, and erotically up my legs, he stops when he reaches the lace edge of my black panties.
