“And now I know that.”

“If we’re going to be here and she’s going to be here, I might as well teach her a lesson.”

“The lesson being?”

“I’ve been trying to convince her that you’re only half the loser you seem to be, but she’s not buying it. Yeah, your mother was a housekeeper, but she snagged a decent catch while no one was looking, raised one cool daughter, and the other isn’t so bad when we get you out of the disgusting clothes and ignore the Virgin Mary thing.”

“Well, did you say it in such a sweet, loving way?” I mocked. “Gee, wonder why that didn’t work.”

“And the sarcasm,” she shot back. “But Saylor said you suck a dog’s anal glands—her words, not mine—and until you accept her offer, she doesn’t want to hear your name or for me to have anything to do with you.” Katie bit off a dainty bite. “Sometimes I have to remind her that even though the lemmings treat her like a queen, no bitch rules Katie Langford.”

“I admire your confidence, Katie.”

She rolled her eyes, flipping her hair. “You more than admire me. You love me, and it’s dull. Enough with the fawning and order me a glass of champagne, and fig and goat cheese tartlets.”

The waiter came by and I ordered two whiskeys with smoked salmon dill canapés, and I beamed at her while doing it. Katie hated whiskey, salmon, and dill.

She laughed. “Touché, but you’re eating all that by yourself.”

A rough throat-clearing broke into my reply. Saylor pushed away from her table, bearing down on us fast.

“Katie,” she said, lips so tight they barely moved as she spoke. Saylor turned her back on me, her ass in my face. “What are you doing?”

“What does it look like, Saylor?”

“We didn’t know you were coming to Toussaint’s tonight too. We’ve got room at our table. I’ll have Maurice set another place.”

Katie blinked rapidly at her, smiling away. “The invitation to join you guys for dinner should’ve come hours ago when you made the plans. As it is, Luna is treating me and it’d be rude to ditch her.”

“Since when do you care about manners? You weren’t worried about being rude when you fucked Piper’s boyfriend in that toolshed the weekend she went away to Aspen.”

“What?!”

Katie leaped to her feet. “I was wasted and he told me they were broken up! Dammit, Saylor, you promised!”

“What do you mean she promised?” Piper cried. “Saylor, you knew she slept with Ahmed and didn’t tell me?”

Eyes big, I leaned back in my seat, reaching for a roll. I was doubly glad I came.

Saylor threw a hand up at Piper. “This is not about you, Piper!”

Katie and Saylor squared off, the air sparking between them.

“What about your promises?” Saylor flung. “Some friend you are, clinking glasses with the bitch who punched me in the face.”

“Everyone wants to punch you in the face, Saylor. If I avoided all the people who hate you, my only friend would be your mother.”

Damn. One point to Katie.

“At least people bother to fake it for me, Katie. Your only friend isn’t even your mother. It’s whoever you’re banging at the time.” Saylor dropped to an exaggerated whisper. “Just so you know, the I love yous don’t count if he only says them when you’re sucking his dick.”

“He also says it when he’s fucking me up the butt. Do those count?”

I choked on my bread. We had the attention of everyone in the restaurant now.

“Ugh,” Saylor screeched. “You’re filthier than the pube wad you spit up after every blow job.”

“And you’re a stuck-up bitch with delusions of grandeur, so I guess we’ve all got problems.”

“Ladies,” a waiter called. “Ladies, please.”

“Oooh,” Saylor crowed. “Grandeur? Where’d you learn that one? Is there a dictionary at the end of Dean’s cock?”

“Your frigid ass will never find out.”

Grinning, Saylor cocked her hip, planting her hands on them. “My frigid ass found out three times the night of the ABC party.”

Katie, Everleigh, Annika, and I gasped.

“Bitch,” Katie shrieked.

“Slut!”

“Cunt!”

“Whore!”

“Ladies!” I shot to my feet, slamming my fist on the table. “It’s flattering that you’re both fighting over me, but maybe we should take it down.”

“As if. No one gives a shit about you,” Saylor snapped. She snatched my ice water and tossed it in my face. Freezing cold penetrated my pores. Water rushed down my cleavage, chilling my flesh in an instant. “There. Now you’re five for five. Cross your fingers you hit the high score.

“Katie, are you coming or not?” Saylor demanded.

“Not.”

She stormed back to her table.

Wow. Katie calls her a friendless cunt and still gets an invitation to eat with her. I stand there breathing and I’m put through the mini ice bucket challenge.

Katie threw herself in her seat, angry-buttering another roll. I excused myself to the bathroom to stick my head under the hand dryer. When I came back, Katie had two bottles of champagne, a plate of cheese tartlets and the scandalous steak frites on the way. She and Saylor glared at each other across the room.
