The food was delicious, no doubt about it. She cut into the potatoes that were just as beautiful, fluffy, and full of flavor. The carrots as well. So good. Road had really outdone himself.

“Do you want to tell me what is going on?” she asked, and picked up her wine glass.

“Nothing is going on.”

“I know you’re a busy guy. Something must have happened for you to opt to make me pot roast, rather than be with your men. You can tell me, I will not judge. You’re feeding me, and it is all delicious.”

Road took a deep breath, and she watched as he expelled it slowly, a little too slowly. She refused to rush him and instead waited and took another bite of her food.

“Do you ever get the feeling that something bad is about to happen?” Road asked. “I’m not saying something … I don’t know what I’m saying.”

“You think something bad is about to happen?” Dinah asked.

“Yeah, I do, and if we’re not careful, and we do what I know Brute is doing, and I even understand why, then it’s going to bite us in the ass.”

“Then you’re going to have to talk to this Brute. Maybe explain to him why you feel this way.”

“There is no talking to him.” He shook his head.

“Why not?”

“Because he and I don’t exactly talk like that. Well, it’s complicated, our friendship changes from day to day.”

“You’re both part of a club, and you don’t take the time to talk.”

He snorted. “We rarely see eye to eye.”

“But, he must have some faith in you, right?”

Road frowned. “What did you say?”

“Some faith in you. If you think about it, after what happened, he wouldn’t have taken you into the club.” She shrugged.

“How do you know Faith?”

She pursed her lips. “It’s religion. You know, faith, that kind of thing.”

“You’re not talking about a person?”

“I don’t know any Faith, why?” she asked. “This is all getting a little confusing. I’m just trying to help you and your club, and are you seriously questioning my intentions again? Thinking I’m working with the damn Golubev. What? My master plan is to tear you apart? You’re the one that keeps coming to me, remember.” She lost her appetite. Putting her knife and fork down, she glared at him. “I’ve had enough and it is time for me to leave.” She got to her feet. “And seeing as this is my house, you can let yourself out.”

“Fuck, damn it, don’t,” he said.

Dinah knew she should just walk away and ignore him, but it was Road, and he was her friend.

“I didn’t mean it like that. Brute’s wife is called Faith, and I just … I’m losing my mind, because I know Sergey plays mind tricks.”

“Well, I’m not some robot he’s controlling. I was trying to be positive to you.” She stood her ground as he rounded the table and came to her.

“I know, and I’m sorry.”

She smiled. “Do you realize that you scrunch up your nose when you apologize?”

“No, I don’t.”

She laughed. “Yeah, you do. Is that something you’re not used to doing? Saying you’re sorry?”

“No, I’m not used to it at all. I tend to use my fists, and that gets the job done.” He rubbed at his eyes, and she saw he was having a hard time handling it.

She cupped his face. “Because I see how difficult this is for you, and how you keep struggling, I’m going to make it easier for you.” She pressed a kiss to his nose. “I forgive you.”

Her mother had often said forgiveness was a sign of strength, not weakness.

He reached out and tucked a strand behind her ear. The look in his eyes seemed to change, and Dinah didn’t know what was coming next, but as his lips brushed against hers and she felt that tingle once again flooding her body, she moaned his name, not wanting to stop.

“Fuck, you drive me crazy,” he said.

One of his hands went to her back and then slid down, going toward her ass, and she felt the warmth of his cock against her. The hard ridge pressed against her stomach.

Dinah reached around his waist and tugged at the tie of his apron. They broke the kiss long enough for her to take off his apron. Even as she had doubts about what she was doing, she continued grabbing his shirt, pulling it off over his head, and tossing it to the floor of her dining room. Road was covered in ink, and as she put her hands on his arms, he suddenly spun her around.

“You’re playing with fire,” he said.

“I don’t care.”

He began to open the buttons of her shirt.

Nerves filled her.

She’d never been naked with a man, but this was Road. Yes, he was an asshole, he was temperamental, and was constantly blowing hot and cold, but he was also kind and sweet. There was more to Road than met the eye.
