Fuck.

I ended the kiss softly, trying my best to make it so she didn’t feel like I was rejecting her. I pressed my forehead to hers, our breathing still ragged. She opened her eyes, looking up at me. I had to wonder what she saw. How she saw me.

“Why’d you stop?”

“Because, as much as I want you, we’ve got to get you to Doc’s first. Before anything, your health and safety are more important than anything else. Same for the baby. Last thing I want to do is harm either of you because I can’t control myself.”

Her mouth opened on a little gasp. “So you don’t want me now?” Her brow furrowed slightly.

“Oh, make no mistake,” I said, taking one of her hands and putting it over my dick where it was hard as a motherfucker beneath my jeans. “I want you now. But I’m not selfish enough to take you before we get the OK from Doc.”

She blinked and pulled back slightly. “You’re not asking Doc if we can have sex. That’s none of his business.”

I chuckled. “No, I don’t reckon it is his business, but I’m not havin’ sex with you until I can be sure I ain’t gonna hurt you or the baby.”

Looking off she said, “Guess I should have been more concerned about that, huh?”

“Honey, you’ve lived with this child since it was conceived. You been havin’ sex regularly since you found out you were pregnant?”

“No! Of course not! I don’t sleep with just anybody! Contrary to how I got in this condition in the first place.”

“Calm down. Ain’t sayin’ you do. Or that it’s wrong if you did. Woman deserves to take her pleasure same as a man. I’m just sayin’ I’m sure you’ve had more to think about than if havin’ sex would hurt the baby. Even if you had wondered about it and had the opportunity, would you have been able to go to the doctor?”

“No.” Her voice was soft, and she looked down at the floor.

I pinched her chin between my thumb and finger, raising her head back up so she had to look at me. “No one’s judgin’ you, baby. Least of all me. You’re back in civilization now, so to speak. First thing on the agenda was to get food, a shower, and rest. Now, it’s time to check on the baby.”

“You’re right.”

I grinned at her. “Good. Let’s go see Doc and see how this little one’s doin’.”

Chapter Five

Emmanuell

How in the world did a motorcycle club have ultrasound equipment? I had no idea. But here I was, in the office of a guy calling himself Doc. I was on an exam table with my shirt up over my belly and the waistband of my pants down under it. Doc squirted a clear jelly onto my stomach, then ran a probe through it. He muttered to himself as he pressed buttons on the machine, taking measurements as he did. He didn’t let me see the screen, and when Gideon went to walk around and look for himself, Doc stopped what he was doing and glared at Gideon until the other man raised his hands in surrender and went back to the other side of the table and took my hand.

My heart leapt. Was there something wrong? Once Gideon was back beside me, I snagged his hand, needing something to ground me. Realizing I was taking a huge liberty, I glanced up at him. Gideon just gave me a soft smile, like he was proud of me or something, and enfolded my hand in both of his.

“I’ll tell you when you can look,” Doc said. “Ain’t done.”

“Anyone ever tell you, you have the worst bedside manner?” Gideon grumbled.

“More than once. I lived then. Guess I’ll live now.” He didn’t look up, but kept pressing buttons on the ultrasound machine and moving the probe slightly one direction or the other.

Finally, after about fifteen or twenty minutes, Doc pulled the probe away and put it back on its base next to the machine and wiped the goop off my belly with a cloth. “Best I can tell, everything’s fine,” he said. “I’ve sent these images to a colleague of mine. I’ll know in a minute if he needs any more images. So, while we’re waiting, we’ll take a look at you, Emmanuell.”

“Ain’t you gonna tell us how the baby is?” Gideon gripped my hand as he glanced my way. I could almost believe he was as anxious as I was.

“Told you, Ripper,” Doc said with a raised eyebrow. “Best I can tell, things are fine. Now. Let’s have a look at your girl, hmm?”

“Um, me and Gideon aren’t together, you know,” I said softly, not wanting Doc to have the wrong impression. “If that’s why you’re doing this, you should know I’m on my own.”
