My next heartbeat skips, tripping my breath. Does Eric want me to love him? “I have to get ready. I don’t want to be late.”

“Okay.” He kisses my forehead, reminding me of his gentle side. “Wear a dress.” He opens the door for me.

“Why?” I dig my key out of my bag while shuffling my feet toward my apartment.

“Easy access,” he says, unlocking his door.

“Perv.” I laugh.

“Only for you, Anna. Only for you.”

Eric grins all the way to the outdoor venue, clearly pleased with my sundress. We grab drinks and claim our spots while the space fills with concert-goers on this humid night.

“The braided pigtails are filling a new level of fantasies for me.” He tugs on them.

“The fact that you have pigtail fantasies kinda fills a few of my fantasies.” I grin.

Eric slides one arm around my waist, and his other covers my breasts, pulling my back to his chest.

I turn my head and press my lips to his bicep. “This is perfect,” I murmur.

He kisses the top of my head. “It is.”

Over the next two hours, I fall a little in love with Eric Steinmann while we shout lyrics into the night, sway to the ballads, and kiss between songs when the stage goes black for thirty seconds. After it’s over, he takes my hand and pulls me toward the parking lot. I suck in a sharp breath when he yanks me behind a big sign surrounded by flowers.

“What are you—”

Eric’s mouth covers mine in a hard kiss for several seconds before he turns me around. My hands reach for the sign to steady my shaky legs. He kisses my neck to my shoulder while he releases himself from his jeans and draws up the back of my dress.

“Eric …” I whisper in a ragged breath.

“Shh …” He peels my panties midway down my thighs. “Fuck …” He groans in my ear while driving into me.

My fingers curl, nails digging into the wood sign.

I can’t harness a single coherent thought. I hear the chattering crowd dispersing, the hum of cars, and squeaky breaks in the parking lot. Are we really out of sight?

I don’t know.

My eyes close to focus on nothing but Eric’s labored breaths at my ear, him moving inside me, and the adrenaline dripping in my veins.

“Wh-what are you doing … to … me?” I whisper.

He bites the skin on my shoulder. “I don’t want to be the guy who gives you red roses every day.”

We find a late-night burger joint and enjoy greasy food and milkshakes in a nearly empty restaurant. Eric makes me laugh until my side hurts.

“It’s not funny.” He pops a fry into his mouth.

I wipe tears from my eyes. “You getting locked out of your hotel room in nothing but a towel is …” I laugh more. “Funny. But the fact that you had to take the elevator to the lobby and…” I snort “…an elderly lady saying you should find Jesus is …” I shake with more laughter.

Eric rolls his eyes, but he can’t hide his grin. “I’m glad you find my misery so humorous.”

My laughter simmers, and we spend a few seconds gazing at each other, sipping the last of our milkshakes at a quarter to midnight. This is the best feeling in the world. I don’t care what we’re doing. As long as I’m with Eric, life is good.

His hand slides across the table, covering mine, and I stare at our hands. “I like you.” I lift my gaze to his and smile. “I like you a lot.”

He nods several times. “I know the feeling all too well.”

CHAPTER NINE

Book Club Night Two

I wear a pink lace cutout sundress and matching wedges to book club. Freya serves wine as everyone mills around a few minutes before seven. My heart’s on the verge of bursting. I’m embarrassingly breathy while I keep my eyes glued to the door.

Where is he?

Biting the inside of my cheek, I decide it’s best just to get started. He’ll completely derail me once he comes through that door.

“Let’s get started.”

After I sit beside Freya, she hands me a generous glass of wine.

“Just in time.”

I glance up at Eric taking a seat across from me. Here it comes … the heat, the memories, the full-on blush. “Hi.”

Once again, his hair is wet. I try not to focus on my intimate knowledge of him. Little things like knowing what he looks like completely naked and dripping wet in the shower. I can still feel the warm security of his embrace, those tiny moments where we know it’s more than sex, but no words are necessary. The way his lips part before his tongue drags across his lower lip when I wrap my lips around his—

“They’re waiting.” Freya elbows me.

Shit.

When did everyone quiet down? And how long have they been staring at me, drooling over Eric while remembering the blow job I gave him last night in the shower?
