“Oh.” I eat the berries, grateful for the sweet zap of energy they provide. “I guess to me I’m used to it?” There’s a big question in my voice though, and she can tell.
“Sia, did they do something bad to you, your old masters?” She touches my hand. “If there’s something you’re afraid to tell us, I want to assure you that every being here will look out for you and protect you. We’re all one hundred percent dedicated to keeping Zandia and the beings here safe from every threat, no matter how big. Or small.”
Her eyes are earnest, but I look away. What if I’m the threat, all the saved humans? What if we’re the bad thing, and as soon as they find out we’re chipped, they’ll send us away?
“I…” I look at her almost in supplication. “There are things I’m scared to say. Do you understand that?”
“Of course, I do. I was a freedom fighter. I’ve rescued humans from the worst kinds of situations. I’m sure you’ve been through hell. But Zandia is safe for you–I promise.”
Wow. A freedom fighter. Mirelle truly is an exceptional human.
“When I first came here I had a hard time trusting my mates. It took time.” She smiles. “It gets easier. Just try to bond with Daven. You can trust him.”
Just hearing the name Daven makes my pulse skitter. Bonding with him is my favorite thing. And I do trust him. I just wish I could be completely certain it was safe to tell him everything. But I can’t.
Her attention is pulled back to the tablet, where she scrolls through the things I transcribed. “Stars, I just can’t believe this! I can’t wait to get this into our systems. This is really phenomenal stuff, Sia. You’re like a hero for providing this. And anything else like this you can give us? It will truly help Zandia.”
I nod. “If I remember more, I’ll save it all.”
Then I look right into her eyes. “Mirelle, if the day comes when I need your help to do something good for Zandia, will you assist me? I mean, if it’s really urgent?”
She looks at me for a beat, then another. Finally she speaks. “Yes.” Her voice is low. “I won’t want to do anything that can get you or me into trouble. But I understand about humans, Sia, and the difficult predicaments that we can have. So yes. If you come to me, I will do my best, within my means. That’s all I can promise.”
“Thank you.”
I feel unaccountably better, like I have an ally here. Not that she’d be my ally if she knew that I’m a chip-ridden potential spy. But if anyone seems to care about helping humans help Zandia, it’s this female.
The door swishes open, and Daven comes in. My body instantly reacts to his presence, my breath catching in my throat. I stand and when he smiles at me, heat rushes through my body.
He beckons to me. “I hear you’ve been a great help to Zandia.”
“I’m trying,” I say, truthfully. When I reach him, he wraps me up in his arms, and I melt against him. “I want to help.”
I lift my gaze to his, and he strokes my cheek. “Thank you, Sia. Just tell me everything you remember.”
I fight back the sense of impending disaster as I nod, swallowing. “I will, Master.”
Daven
I love the way Sia’s dark head jerked up when I entered the chamber, those warm brown eyes instantly riveting to my face. She has bonded to me, just as every being promised.
I heard what happens when a Zandian warrior employs sexual dominance with a human female, but now that I’m seeing it with my own eyes, I haven’t stopped marveling. It’s a wonder to have this female’s complete attention whenever we’re in the same chamber. The way her body responds to mine. One stern word or look from me, and the scent of her arousal fills the room.
She likes my punishments. Craves my touch.
I crave her, too. Every moment of every planet rotation.
When I’m away, I look forward to coming back. And it’s not just for the sexual pleasure. It’s the sound of her voice. The brilliance of her smile. The steady way she’s attuned to me, so all I need to do is give a subtle shake of my head or nod, and she scurries to please me.
And now she’s really starting to give us useful information. She’s proving she’s trustworthy.
I’m ready to petition King Zander to allow me to formally mate her. To pierce her skin and embed my crystal as a mating gift and forever mark her as mine.
Her expression now is bright. She’s happy. New human rescues are stunned to discover human females with extraordinary skills like Mirelle. And Mirelle isn’t our only human fighter pilot. There’s Cambry and her brother Tal, as well.
