Surprisingly, she made herself scarce in the last few weeks. The dreaded confrontation never came, which only made me suspicious and waiting for a big explosion to happen.

Alec stopped the movie. “All right,” he said slowly. “But you know that there was never anything real between Kate and me. We were friends but the spark was never there between us. She and I had just been clinging to the relationship out of habit and because it seemed like the right thing to do.”

That was a strange thing to say, I thought. Why was keeping up a relationship the right thing to do?

He continued, “She’s still pissed, and she never misses a chance to make that clear to me. She even tried to blackmail me, but—”

“Blackmail?” My neck bristled. What could Kate possibly use against Alec?

He was silent for a moment. “Yeah,” he said reluctantly. “We spent so much time together on our joint mission that we’re bound to share a few secrets.”

“The mission where you and Kate first became a couple?” I still remembered the utter shock and heartbreak I’d felt when Kate and Alec had entered headquarters as a couple for the very first time. And just as vividly I remembered the twisted smile on Kate’s face and the triumph in her eyes when our gazes had crossed. I’d thought I would never hate someone more than I hated her in that moment.

Alec nodded but I could tell from the set of his jaw and the tightness in his shoulders that that mission—or the secrets that went along with it—wasn’t something he wanted to talk about.

Alec kissed me. “Don’t let Kate ruin this evening. The relationship was a mistake. All that matters now is what’s between us.”

I nodded reluctantly, and relaxed against him, though part of me didn’t want to let the topic go. Alec turned the movie back on. But suddenly seeing Kiddo’s pursuit of revenge wasn’t so funny anymore, because I was pretty sure Kate would be on a similar quest soon—not to kill me, but she would certainly make my life hell.

Alec touched my cheek and kissed me deeply before he murmured, “You trust me?”

I frowned. “Of course.”

“I want to take your mind off things.”

I didn’t get the chance to ask how. Alec sat up and moved down the bed, then kneeled down on the floor. My eyes grew wide when he pulled me closer to the edge until my calves hung down and Alec kneeled before me. He kissed my knee and goose bumps erupted all over my body. His fingertips stroked along my outer thighs before he grabbed my knees and gently moved them apart. My cheeks flamed when he lowered his head and kissed my inner thigh, close to my knee, and then slowly traveled higher, leaving small kisses on my skin. He reached the edge of my shorts and moved it aside with his mouth to leave a kiss on the sensitive skin beside my panties.

My breathing came in short gasps, my body flushed with heat as I stared up at the ceiling. Alec’s hands touched my belly then hooked in the waistband of my shorts. I could do nothing but focus on breathing.

“Do you want me to stop?”

“No.” The word was a croak.

Alec pulled down my shorts and then I could feel his stubble against my inner thigh and he pressed a kiss to my panties before he pulled down those as well. My cheeks heated with embarrassment. Alec was kneeling between my legs and looking straight at me.

“Isn’t it uncomfortable for you to kneel on the floor?” I blurted.

Alec chuckled, his breath against my most private area before he kissed me there. “That’s what you worry about right now?” His voice was low and then his tongue stroked along my sensitive skin, parting me.

I moaned and touched Alec’s head. I didn’t say anything, only panted and gasped, my eyes still desperately focused on the ceiling.

Alec didn’t speak again either, but I could hear his quickening breath matching my own. Gathering my courage, I risked a glance down. I only saw Alec’s head between my legs from my vantage point. I would have to push up on my elbows to see more, but I worried Alec would look up and catch me watching him. His head bobbed up and down slowly as he trailed his tongue along my slit and the sight sent a new wave of desire through my body. Alec looked up, his eyes locking on mine. I quickly jerked my gaze away and stared back up at the ceiling, mortified.

“You can watch,” Alec rasped.

I didn’t say anything and didn’t look again. For some reason, this felt too personal, which was ridiculous considering Alec was between my legs. It couldn’t get more personal than that.

I tried to focus on the sensation and not allow my mind to take control. Soon my body began to shake uncontrollably and pleasure exploded through me. I cried out, then bit my lip to silence myself. I didn’t want anyone to overhear us. When I finally came back to my senses, I realized my fingers were clutching on to the blankets for dear life. I bit my lip with a grin, my eyes closing as Alec pressed a kiss to my knee.
