Her eyes are glazed over, and she hasn’t had the first drink. She blows out a breath. “You mean they won’t know from that kiss?”

I chuckle and lean down to kiss the tip of her nose. “Dance with me.”

She nods, and I wrap my arms around her as we sway to the music. We’re not on beat or any kind of tempo with the fast music that’s playing, but I’m learning that we may be creating our own kind of rhythm.

Isabella

Since the night at the bar, we’ve been closer than ever. He’s taken to working at the house in the mornings and then going to his office in the afternoon. He’s made it home for dinner every night, and he’s always touching me. Well, except in the bedroom. It’s like in there he can’t get to the opposite side of the bed far enough. But I’m not complaining. G is happier than I’ve seen her in a long time. We spend our evenings with her, watching television. We found that both Lucas and I love Westerns, so we’ve filled our nights watching those with his granny.

I just got off the phone with Carlotta and walk into the living room. Granny is seated on the couch, eyes glued to the TV. Lucas is sitting in the recliner, and his eyes find mine. His gaze travels the length of me and back up again before he holds his hand out to me. “Come and sit with me.”

Granny snickers, and I know I can’t deny him. I walk across the room and gingerly try to sit on his lap. His hands go to my waist, and he pulls me down until I’m fully seated. He pulls the lever of the chair, and our legs and feet rise in the air. He tucks mine between his. I’m rigid as a board, and he leans into my ear and whispers, “Relax.”

I whisper hiss back at him, “I’m too heavy.”

His arm snakes around my waist, and his big hand settles on my belly. “You’re perfect, Bella.”

With his other arm, he grabs a blanket and pulls it up over us. Between the warmth of the blanket and the heat of him surrounding me, I burrow into him. He grunts, and I tell him, “I told you.”

He wickedly kisses my ear. “That’s not what the groan was about.”

My eyes widen, and my mind goes a mile a minute.

The movie continues, but I have no clue what’s going on. All I can think about right now is Lucas.

“Well, I think I’m going to go on to bed, you two.”

I hate the thought of getting up, but I start to sit up. “I’ll help you, G.”

She waves me off. “Nonsense. I texted Betsy, and she’s on her way.”

I take a minute to look at G, and her color is off. She looks really pale. “Are you feeling okay?”

She waves me off. “Yes, I’m fine.”

But I can tell she’s not telling me the whole truth. She’s out of breath just moving to the edge of the couch. “G, don’t lie to me.”

She opens her mouth to do just that but then thinks twice about it. “I’m a little more tired than normal, but that’s all. I just need some sleep.”

She tries to give me a smile to let me know she’s okay, but I see right through it. Betsy comes to help her up to her room, and I tell her to let me know if she needs my help at all tonight. Granny gets two steps and Lucas is lowering the feet of the chair. He helps me up and then sets me back down, telling me he’ll be right back before going to his granny.

He lifts her up in his arms. “One ride to bed coming up.”

Granny, Betsy, and I all chuckle as he carries his granny from the room.

“Good night,” I call to them.

How in the world am I supposed to stay immune to Lucas when he does things like this? Seeing him with his grandmother and how he cares for her is enough to make me swoon. Heck, even the hardest of hearts would swoon watching him with her.

He comes back and heads straight for me.

“Uh, do you want me to move now?”

He lifts me up, sits down, and pulls me back into his lap. Literally in three seconds, he has us back in the same position as before. “Why would I want you to do that?”

I shrug, trying to remind myself this is all for show. The lines are all getting confused now. “Granny’s not here... we don’t have to... you know.”

“Stay,” he commands.

I lie back in his arms. His hand trails across my belly back and forth. He pulls my hair back, exposing my neck, and presses his warm lips to me there. I close my eyes as all the sensations ricochet in my body. My nipples harden almost painfully. There’s a tug in my lower belly, and I’m sure that there’s a wetness between my thighs just like any other time Lucas has touched me.
