So now the only outsider who’s left is Axel. And if the huge smile on his face is any indication, he’s not leaving.

“So, let me get this straight…” Ammo holds out his hand. “You were engaged to Rachel? But instead married her daughter?”

Oh God, I’m cringing this conversation is so bad. Reaching to take the bottle of Jäger from Ammo’s hand, he slings his arm casually around my shoulder.

“No. I’m married to Raven,” Jett states, and I just blink at him, because how is that any different?

“Nice.” Ammo looks at me as he takes the bottle back and shrugs. “I mean…I get it, but…”

“Excuse me? That’s my wife.” Jett moves forward, and Axel steps in between them as Ammo smiles.

“Jett, forgive him. Ammo’s a dick, and any other time I’d say take this outside, but this is an important day for my sister…” Axel pushes Ammo back, but he doesn’t move.

“Ammo! That’s Raven’s mother,” I snap. “I understand that you don’t like Rachel but—”

Raven steps forward and holds up her hand. “No, he’s right. My mother is a cunt. Just be really careful, Courtney, because she’s not who you think she is.” She nods at me, then takes Jett’s hand and they walk away.

I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone, because what just happened?

“Courtney?” Ammo’s harsh voice snaps my eyes up to his as I bite down on my bottom lip, trying really hard not to either cry or start screaming. Raven is either the worst person in the world, or something is wrong with Rachel, and if Rachel is bad… Well, that can’t be, she’s been like a mother to me.

Raven’s in love with Jett. And Jett was engaged to Rachel.

That’s it.

That’s why she doesn’t like her mother…end of story.

“That was creepy, right?” I grab onto Ammo’s shirt, needing him to assure me that everything is okay, that the voice in the back of my head I should totally ignore, because what the hell?

“We’re getting out of here.” Ammo takes my hand, and we start to move forward, as Granger calls for everyone’s attention.

“Alright. My beautiful wife and I have something to tell you all…” I look around as everyone starts screaming and whistling. Axel and Antionette stand behind them laughing with an older woman, whom I’m assuming is Axel and Gia’s mother?

“Let me tell you all about a brat, with long brown hair, always barefoot, and always following me around, taking pictures and saying she was going to marry me and have my babies…” Granger reaches for Gia’s hand as she smiles and starts crying.

“Well, she was right. Gia’s pregnant.” And my heart starts to race, as everyone screams and moves toward them.

God, what is wrong with me? Of course, I’m happy for them, and it’s not even like this is a surprise. Everyone was pretty sure that was why they were having this party today, so why my chest feels heavy is anyone’s guess.

I don’t even want kids.

I don’t.

But seeing them together, happy and excited… It just feels like that’s not in the cards for me, and I need to be okay with it because people would kill to have my life.

But what they don’t know is that as glamourous as this life can be, it’s lonely and isolating. I’ve dedicated my life to the masses, and at the end of the day that has to be enough. Ammo’s strong warm hand tightens on mine as he works his way through all the well-wishers.

Be careful, Courtney…Raven’s words swirl around my head, but it’s not Rachel who scares me. She can’t really hurt me.

These feelings, wanting more with the man in front of me.

That can hurt me.

Marshall Ammo Adams could hurt me, like really hurt me.

Be careful, Courtney…

I take a deep breath because I intend to.

AMMO

“You okay?” I take a deep inhale off my cigarette. Courtney’s been quiet the entire ride back to her place. My eyes barely register the beautiful homes as we pull up to her gate.

“Um, no, Marshall, I’m not,” she snaps, turning toward me. Christ, the way over I was finger fucking her pussy, and now we’re like two different people.

“You know, I’ve had to put up with Malcolm for years hating on Rachel, but at least he seemed to somewhat understand. But you…you don’t even try.” She takes a breath and my eyes narrow on her.

“So, this is about the cunt again?” I lean back into the leather seat as we wait for the gate to open.

“She is not a cunt. She has been there for me, holding my hand, making sure I was on every talk show, cover of magazines, radio interviews, you name it, and Rachel has done it. For me.” She slaps her chest dramatically, but her eyes are welling up with tears. “When my piece of crap boyfriend fucked my best friend, she stayed with me for days because I couldn’t get out of bed.” Her voice is getting louder as I cock my head at her, because I refuse to fight about Rachel.
