With her long black hair, and body to die for, she, of course, catches everyone’s attention. But it’s her talent that’s made her coveted far and wide. She’s also fiercely loyal and doesn’t fuck your boyfriend, so that’s a plus.

“What’s happened now?” I snap, my head already throbbing, I probably didn’t need to drink that whole bottle of Cristal champagne by myself last night. I toss the covers off me as I snarl at Melanie.

“Don’t throw me that death glare. You know I’m not fazed by it, Court.”

“You’re bugging me,” I grumble, pulling off my vintage Amy Winehouse t-shirt and putting on my black tank dress. I head to my bathroom while twisting up my hair into a messy bun. Melanie’s loud slurping makes me roll my eyes, then I almost scream as I look in the mirror.

“Jesus.” I sigh, turning on the cold water. I guess I passed out wearing yesterday’s makeup. My eyes look like I’m wearing a burglar mask there’s so much mascara smeared on them. Screw it, I don’t have time to reapply. I’m going natural, I decide as I scrub my face.

“Here.” Mel hands me a towel as I arch a brow at her.

“Thanks.”

“Pat’s downstairs, along with Malcolm, who looks about as bad as you.” She tosses her empty plastic cup in my garbage can…thank God, the torturous sounds are now finished.

“Perfect,” I grumble as I viciously take out all my frustrations on brushing my teeth as I brace myself to face my drummer.

“Yeah, Rachel released to the press that Broken Vixens are through.” She walks behind me to look at herself in my mirror, and since I’m not in heels, she’s almost two heads taller than me. I hate being petite, I always feel so vulnerable.

“Good.” I spit.

“Look, I’m here because I love you, and I will always be team Courtney.” She holds up a hand to stop me from speaking.

“I don’t care that you act like you don’t need me, I know you do. That being said, Rachel should have consulted the band before releasing a statement like that. Pat is furious, and Roxy has lawyers involved.”

“Wait.” I turn to actually look up at her. “Are you telling me Roxy actually believes I’d stay in the band?” I scream because this is the icing on the cake. Melanie just stares at me as I take a deep breath. Yelling at Mel is not going to help matters. In fact, all it’s doing is making me want to lock my door and hide.

“I’m sorry…I’m a bitch.” I bite my lower lip trying not to burst into tears.

“You are, but so am I.” She smirks, “Oh, come here.” She grabs me as I cling to her, turning my head so I’m not smothered in her ridiculous pink latex jumpsuit.

“I hate her. I had to quit, for my own sanity,” I choke out.

“I know. I quit also.” She pulls back to look at me. “Roxy’s a cunt. But you need to go downstairs and handle this. Pat was blindsided.”

“Wait, you quit?” I sniff.

“Of course, I quit. You’re my little Smurfette; also, I told you years ago there was something wrong with Rox—”

“I know, I know,” I cut her off because Melanie loves to say I told you so. It sucks because you can’t argue with her since she is right, at least on this subject. She did tell me it was weird how close she and Johnny were.

“Let’s get this over with.” I walk around her and head downstairs, her heeled boots clicking behind me.

“Now be gentle with how you handle Pat, she’s hurt, and has issues.”

“I got it.” Holding up my hand as we round the corner just as Pat screams at Malcolm, “Fuck you.”

“Peppermint Patty, relax, my love.” Melanie smiles, only to have Pat and Malcolm turn toward us.

“Shut up, Melanie.” She sneers as she stares at me, and I really wish I had remembered to put on some heels. Standing barefoot makes me feel even shorter, less in control, and full-on vulnerable. I straighten my shoulders back and calmly speak.

“Pat, I know you’re upset, but you can’t possibly think I’d stay in the group after she had the gall to announce that she’s pregnant.”

She takes a step toward me. “Upset? I’m past upset. Get your lawyers ready, Courtney.” Malcolm reaches out to grab her arm.

“Fucking relax, Pat.” He looks over at me. “Rachel released a statement that the Broken Vixens are over.” I stare at him, then at Pat’s angry face.

“Yeah? So what? I told her I was quitting,” I snap, “And don’t try and threaten me with a lawsuit.”

“Let go.” Pat rips her arm away from Malcolm, and again, I really wish I had put heels on since I hate looking up at her.

“You want to quit, fine. To be honest, I thought something was wrong with you for staying in the band after the affair was thrown in your face. But you’re not the only one in Broken Vixens, and that bitch Rachel does not work or speak for me.” She screams in my face.
