She didn’t want to be talking to him.

Even more, she didn’t want the man to know why she was there.

“I asked you a question,” Cole snapped.

I fisted my hands to keep from stepping out of the shadows and strangling the little shit.

“I’m here, Cole, because I wanted to talk to Banger,” she answered. “Why are you here? And why are you talking to me? I thought we said all we were going to say when we broke up.”

So this was the asshole who’d chosen to leave her.

Idiot.

“You walked out,” Cole said. “Why?”

There was a long moment of silence while Sabrina’s mouth opened and closed. Then she sputtered, “You’re seriously asking me why we broke up?”

“Yes,” Cole confirmed.

Sabrina did the whole blinking thing again. “You mean, it wasn’t obvious when you asked me, the night before our wedding, if your father could check my hymen to make sure I was still pure, why I left?”

Cole went solid at that, his arms crossing over his chest defensively. “I don’t see why it was such a big deal.”

“It was a big deal because, A, I don’t want your father anywhere near my vagina. B, hymens are practically a myth now. You can lose a hymen from riding bikes, horses, putting tampons in, or many other ways. C, I realized rather quickly after you told me to not come back that I didn’t want to go back to you. I was deluding myself into thinking that we had something when, in fact, we clearly didn’t. You were, by far, the reason we broke up. And I don’t even know why we are talking right now. I don’t even like you anymore.”

I would’ve laughed at her final sentence had I not been so flabbergasted by the first.

I’d known that she’d broken up with her fiancé not too long ago, but… I hadn’t known why.

Now I knew. And now I wanted to beat the absolute dog shit out of her ex-fiancé. Then walk around with him on the bottom of my shoe, carrying his stench everywhere.

More so, I wanted to walk up to Sabrina and put my arm around her shoulder and let the fucker standing in front of her know that she was mine now.

But I couldn’t.

So I stayed where I was and allowed her to fight her own battles.

All because my sister’s peace of mind was more important to me than my own happiness.

CHAPTER 11

Rule #1. Fuck what they think.

-Price to Sabrina

SABRINA

“That’s what I’d do.”

I looked over at Banger, who’d surprisingly started spending a whole lot more time with me than I’d ever expected her to.

One day she’d come over to my house, and the rest was history.

The good thing was, she wasn’t completely suffocating like I’d always been afraid of. She sat in the corner of the room, ate with me, watched television, and ultimately didn’t bother me if I wanted to read.

It was… nice.

“You’d do what?” I grumbled, miffed about the situation. “Technically, it’s in his name. I can’t do anything about it. I might have helped him pay it off, but without my name on the title, or the money for a lawyer to fight him for the truck—which I might not even win in the grand scheme of things—there’s nothing I can do.”

“Your father is a doctor in the ER,” Banger pointed out. “He has money.”

What she said was true.

But my father had gone into debt to help pay for my schooling at the University of Tennessee. He was just now free of that debt. There was no way that I was going to ask him to borrow any money.

Right now, things were just a little tight, because the month before Cole and I had broken it off, we thought it would be best to start our lives together debt free. Which meant paying off Cole’s school loans, as well as his credit card bills and what few I’d accumulated over the year that I’d been at a job without my father paying my entire way.

And now… I had nothing to show for it.

I had almost eighteen whole dollars in my savings account. Four hundred and twenty-nine in my checking. And a whole lot of bills to pay that were going to be quickly adding up now that I had to start paying for them all by myself again.

Like my phone bill. Why is it that the original line is twice as much as each additional line?

And why is it that I can’t have my old fuckin’ number without the permission from the account holder? Another thing… why the hell had I ever agreed to do any of this before the fucking wedding?

Needless to say, I was a fuckin’ moron.

“You could do something…” Banger said. “You could go in the dead of night and trash his truck.”

I thought about that long and hard before saying, “I like my job. If I were to get caught doing that, which let’s face it, I would because I’m me. If I got caught, I’d lose my nice cushy job and likely not be able to find another one, even in the same field. Then, I’d have to go into the real world and find a job, and that means being with people… so yeah. I don’t think that’s the best idea.”
