“That was so good,” she told him when it was gone. “I think I love having you as a Daddy.”
“I’m so glad. Are you ready for a nap, Rainbow?”

He stood, holding her in his arms and walking to the changing table. It was hard to contain how elated he was. He had expected this hurdle to be steeper than it was proving. He settled her gently on the changing table and reached across to grab the nylon strap, stretching it across her tummy.

“Nope. Not now.” He bopped her nose, making her giggle before he stepped to the end of the table and grabbed a diaper. Pushing her T-shirt up, he exposed her fully to his view for the first time.

She twisted her head to the side as he pointed at the row of stuffies on the shelf. “Ummm. The unicorn. “What should we name him?” Garrett asked.
“Sprinkles!”
He smiled. “I love that.” He leaned over to kiss her forehead. “Sleep tight, Rainbow.” He lifted the side of her crib. “And remember, Little girls don’t climb out of their cribs. It’s not safe. If you need Daddy because you have a tummy ache or you’re hurting in some other way, call out. If you need to potty, that’s what your diaper is for.”
“Yes, Daddy.”
He patted her tummy and left the room, but he felt like he left a piece of himself in that nursery with her. She had stolen his heart and it would remain in her possession when he wasn’t in the room.
