“I’m just saying you have options. Not that Arch is letting you go anywhere.”
“The man won’t even have sex with me!” I shout, forgetting I’m in the middle of a coffee shop for a second. The whole place goes quiet.
“If you’re—”
“Don’t even!” Ollie whips around, pointing her finger at the guy sitting across the coffee shop at a table by himself. He holds his hands up in defeat, backing down. She turns slowly back around. “Okay, where were we? Sex! Right.”
“No, not right. There is no sex.” Why am I really worked up about this?
“I’m a little confused here, Vee. Weren’t you the one who was worried that this thing was only about sex for Arch?” Ollie reminds me. “And now that you found out it’s clearly not just about sex, you’re mad?”
“Why did you have to put it that way?” Sometimes I hate when she makes sense.
“Right, sorry. He’s a jerkface, and you should sleep at my place tonight to teach him a lesson.”
“Nice try. Not happening.”
“I’m just saying that maybe if you stay at my place and forget to tell Arch where you’re going to be that maybe it will spark something inside of him.” She gets that devious look on her face.
The one I know all too well. It’s the one she always gets when she thinks she’s come up with some master plan. Going to the Ravens MC club to begin with was a prime example of one of her bright ideas. Luckily that worked out well for her. For both of us really.
“Or I could go back to my own place for a while.” Even as I say the words they feel wrong.
“I hate you staying there. More so now that your grandfather is dead. Some of those people who were his followers were creepy. He didn’t do much for you, but I think he at least kept them at bay.”
Damn. I’d never thought about that, but she’s probably right. A lot of the people my grandfather dealt with gave me the creeps. I stayed out of sight and mind as much as I could. I’m actually surprised how much my grandfather let me do that.
I think he saw how he put too much pressure on my mom which made her rebel. She took off, never wanting to return. I think he thought he had some control if I was at least near and somewhat dependent on him. The man was all about control. I might not have known him well, but I knew that.
“Let’s go to the club.” I break. “I’m going to talk to Arch.”
“How adult of you.”
“It would already break my heart if we broke up. The truth is I have nothing to lose.”
“And everything to gain,” Ollie is quick to add.
“I want what you have.”
“I think you already have it.”
“I hope so.” I smile as we pack up our stuff. “I’m surprised Jason let you out of his sight after everything that happened,” I say as she pulls out the keys to her car. Her very new car Jason shoved on her early this morning. He insisted she needed it, saying something about the safety features.
“I was too, but I pushed. I’m going to coffee with my best friend. He can’t always hover.”
“Are you sure about that?” I tease, holding the door open to the coffee shop for her. She’s not parked far from the front of the coffee shop, but I only make it a few feet out, and William is there on the sidewalk in front of me.
“I’ve been trying to get ahold of you. We need to clear some things up about your grandfather.” He gets right to the point. He’s in one of his cheesy suits, his dark hair slicked back. Does he always try to look like a used car salesman? Is that his goal when he gets ready each day?
“I’ll be moving out of the trailer,” I say before I try to step around him. He shifts with me.
“There is more than that. The church.”
“I’m not a member of it.”
“You can be. Your grandfather would have loved that. You know that?” I open my mouth and close it. I’m not sure how to respond to that. I’m not sure the man actually loved me. But he was happy when he could get anyone into his church.
“We’re leaving, William.” Ollie butts herself in. He gives her a snide look as he always does. Their hatred for each other is mutual.
“You’re really whoring yourself out to those Ravens.” I gasp. How the heck does he even know about that?
“The hell you say?” Ollie shoves his chest hard.
“They’re using you. You—” A fist slams into William’s chin, cutting him off. He goes flying back, hitting the concrete sidewalk. Archer makes a lunge for him, but Jason grabs him.
“Not worth it. I’ll handle this. Get your girl out of here,” he tells him, but Archer doesn’t look like he wants to stand down. His fists are clenched at his side.
