But being with Danni isn’t going to be a break.
It’s going to be a test.
Can I sit across from her for an entire evening and not completely lose my mind?
At least Elizabeth will be there too. That should force me to be on my best behavior.
When my cell phone buzzes from my pocket, I take it out and answer quickly.
“Dad.” It’s Elizabeth, her voice breathy. “I’m sorry. This is such a dick move.”
“What’s wrong?” I ask.
“I was planning on coming straight after college, but I need to help a friend with a project. It’s due tomorrow, and they need….” She lowers her voice, making me wonder if the friend’s close by. “A lot of help. It’s not their fault. Or maybe it is a little. Anyway, I don’t want them to fail. Are you already at the restaurant?”
“Yeah,” I say, letting out a slow breath as pride touches me. “But don’t worry. Help your friend. I wouldn’t expect anything less from you.”
“You don’t mind?” she asks.
“No,” I tell her.
“Promise?”
I smile. “Promise.”
“One more thing. Danni’s not answering her phone. I know she was planning on getting a cab down. Could you wait there for a little while, just in case she turns up? I don’t want her waiting there all night for us.”
I swallow, trying to think of a reasonable excuse I can give, a way to say no without alerting her to the fact I want her best friend on every level a man can want a woman.
She belongs to me.
Even if I have to deny that fact.
“Sure,” I say. “That’s fine.”
“Okay,” her breath shudders. “Thanks, Dad. This means a lot to me. I’ll make it up to you.”
“There’s no need,” I tell her.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
She hangs up, leaving me to continue pacing as I wait for my woman.
She arrives five minutes later, making me bite down as I study her. She’s wearing a long dress with a jacket draped over her shoulders, the fabric black and glittery, settling against her thighs and temptingly outlining her shape.
Her hair is partially styled but in a beautifully messy way. She clasps a small bag, and as she gets closer, I can see the cool night air making her cheeks an even more enthralling shade of red.
She pauses when she sees me, actually stops walking, her head tilted.
I move toward her, not thinking, my manhood flooding with hardness as my heart surges with want.
“You look beautiful,” I say, voice husky as I stop barely an inch short, close enough to touch, to grab, to kiss.
“Thank you,” she whispers. “But I thought….”
“What, Danni?”
“We weren’t going to say things like that.”
“I know,” I laugh breathily. “But it’s hard not to when you look so. Damn. Good.”
She looks around, causing her voluptuous body to shift around, causing my hands to twitch. I clench them in an effort to stop my natural instincts from taking over.
“Where’s Lizzy?” she asks.
When I explain, Danni lets out a short breath, reminding me of how she sounded in the office five days ago when my hand was between her legs. I was pumping up and down, feeling her slickness, her soaked want, her face pressed against my chest, her hot breath…
All of it returned to me in a short, tempting jolt.
“So what do we do?” she asks.
We go home. We end this.
That’s what I should say, but my mouth simply won’t shape the words.
“You’ve made too much of an effort for us to cancel,” I say after a pause.
She flinches, causing her body to tremble enticingly again. It’s the fabric of the dress, settling against her like mist, letting me feast on every movement in her curvy perfection.
“Are you sure?” she asks.
“We can be good,” I smirk. “It’s just one dinner.”
She meets my eye, both of us oblivious to the fact we’re standing on the sidewalk, people walking by us.
We’re lost in each other, as though a bubble encloses and separates us from the rest of the world. Nothing else exists when we’re together, except for each other…and Elizabeth, constantly hovering in the background.
“It would be nice,” she murmurs. “And…well….”
“What, Danni?” I say firmly, taking a step closer, my manhood pushing achingly against my pants. And then I read the emotion on her face, my woman’s unspoken words clear to me. “I’ve missed you too.”
She smiles shakily. “Really?”
“It’s been hard – and that’s an understatement – trying to stay away from you. That’s why I’ve been working so much. Shall we head in?”
She bites her lip, nodding, making her look sexy, angelic, and mine.
I almost place my hand on the small of her back as we head for the entrance. I’m aware of how gorgeous she looks, her natural beauty enhanced by her outfit.
But I manage to stop myself, knowing Elizabeth might find out…and I might grab on firmly, slide down to her ass, five days’ worth of hunger burning inside me.
