“Yes. Look!” CC pushed up her sleeve to reveal a bandaged spot where her PICC line had been. “They took it out! I just have antibiotic tablets to take now.”

“Freedom!” he cheered with her. “I thought maybe they’d take that out today but didn’t want to get your hopes up. Shall we celebrate tonight?”

“I’d like that. This feels huge.”

“When you get home from the coffee shop, take a nap.” He held his hand up to stop her automatic protests. “A nap will make Tangerine happy and make you feel like staying up a little later. Put on a dressy outfit and we’ll go somewhere special to celebrate.”

CC’s heart raced when he leaned in to kiss her before walking her back to the exit.

“Hey, Dr. Hunter,” a woman cooed as she headed toward the emergency room. “I was hoping I would find you here.”

The small hairs on CC’s arms stood on end at the syrupy sweet voice and broad fake smile. Dr. Hunter? Ugh.

“Hello, Mrs. Adams. How’s your son’s arm? Healing well, I hope.”

CC glanced at Hunter, noting he sounded formal and addressed the woman professionally even though he didn’t seem to notice the woman was clearly flirting hard with him.

The woman wrapped a lock of hair around her finger and played with it. She ignored CC entirely. “I was hoping you’d have some advice for the itching. He keeps sticking pencils down inside the cast to scratch. That can’t be a good idea. What if he gets lead poisoning?” she asked dramatically.

“Give me just a second.” Hunter turned toward CC. “I’ll see you tonight?”

“Uh, sure.” CC’s heart was racing as she walked away to get into her car. She hated witnessing the weird interaction between Hunter and the other woman, but she supposed if she was going to start dating a doctor, she’d have to get used to the occasional interruption from patients.

As soon as CC arrived back at the coffee shop, Sunshine gave her a mischievous look. “What?” CC asked.

“Your hot doctor called a few minutes ago.”

CC furrowed her brow. “That’s weird. I just stopped by the hospital to see him. Do I need to call him back?” Maybe he realized he had other plans for tonight and needed to cancel their date. The thought made her sad. What if that other woman… She shook the silly thought from her mind. He hadn’t been interested in that other woman. He was simply kind and helpful.

“Nope. He didn’t call to talk to you. He called to talk to me.” Sunshine giggled.

CC froze, staring at her assistant in shock, wondering if Hunter was interested in Sunshine. It didn’t make sense. He’d spent every night with CC for the past two weeks, including sleeping in her bed with her.

Everything Hunter had done for her had been incredibly sweet and special. He’d taken care of her every need, including helping her eat and bathe. Surely he hadn’t done all of that just to be a kind man while he was really interested in Sunshine.

CC swallowed. She felt a bit faint, and she turned slowly and headed toward her office. She needed a few minutes to process what was happening. It just didn’t add up. He hadn’t taken their relationship any further than kissing and snuggling in the past two weeks, but she’d assumed he was her Daddy.

“CC?” Sunshine called out from behind her, having followed her to her office.

CC lowered herself onto her desk chair before meeting Sunshine’s gaze. She was trying not to react.

Sunshine frowned. “I think you misunderstood. Hunter didn’t call to talk to me like you’re thinking. He called to ask me if there was any way I could open up and manage without you tomorrow because he’s planning to take you out and didn’t want you to get up too early and not get enough sleep.”

CC blinked. “Oh.” She definitely had misunderstood.

Sunshine’s brows were still furrowed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.”

CC waved a dismissive hand in front of her. “Of course. It’s okay. I don’t know why I doubted him. I guess I’m still struggling with the idea that Hunter wants to be with me. It’s new and I’m not used to dating.”

Sunshine stepped farther into the office. Melanie was handling things up front, and this wasn’t the busiest time of day, so CC knew it wasn’t an issue.

“Is everything okay?” Sunshine asked, taking a seat across from CC. “You were so excited when you left for your infusion. I know you were hoping they would take the line out. And I see they did. Why do you look so unnerved?”

CC sighed. She felt unnerved all of a sudden too. She’d been so excited to share her news with Hunter, but now that she had a moment to think through the implications, she realized she really liked him. A lot.
