“Hi, Tangy. I know. He’s okay. Hunter’s supposed to be here.” She sank down onto the hardwood floor and carefully gathered the cat into her arms. “I missed you.”

Loud purrs filled the room when Hunter reappeared holding the shampoo and conditioner as well as fluffy towels. “Looks like he missed you.”

Hunter set everything on the counter before sitting down next to CC. Tangerine was generous enough to roll closer to the handsome man beside CC to get some belly rubs. The cat purred ecstatically.

“He’s missed going to the store. I’ll have to take him tomorrow,” she said.

“No offense, Tangerine, but you’re a bit chunky,” Hunter observed before looking at CC. “You need to be careful lifting while you have that PICC line.”

“I know. I’m hoping I can use my recovering hand tomorrow.”

“Let’s get your hair washed and worry about tomorrow after you’ve had some sleep,” he suggested, rising easily to his feet before helping her stand as well.

He pulled a chair from the table for her to kneel on as she put her head over the sink. Hunter started the water to warm it before wrapping a towel around her shoulders and handing her a soft washcloth.

“Hold this over your eyes so we don’t get soap in them.” Within a minute, he moved the sprayer over her hair to wet it.

As he massaged shampoo through her hair, CC tried not to groan. Hunter was amazing at this. He scrubbed his fingers across her scalp with the perfect amount of pressure. Her attempts to stifle her moans of pleasure failed miserably.

“Feels good, huh?” he asked.

“How do you know how to do this so well?” she asked, hoping he’d never stop.

“I worked in my aunt’s hair salon in high school, college, and medical school. Really, longer than that. I went there after school each day. After I did my homework, she’d let me help around the shop. The ladies loved me,” he said with a laugh.

“I bet you were a big draw,” she said, imagining that Hunter had always been attractive and fit. “You shampooed people’s hair?”

“When I was old enough to lean over the bowl. I still love the smell and the feel of the creamy suds on silky wet hair.”

“Would you say you have a hair fetish?” she teased, trying to distract herself from the pleasure he lavished on her.

“Sure. I like hair. And pumpkin spice lattes. I was the errand boy, too.”

She bit her lip to keep from asking for more when he turned the water back on to rinse out the suds. The repeated process with the conditioner rewarded her for not begging him to continue.

“You could have told me you’re a pro at this,” she commented.

“What kind of surprise would that have been? Besides, would you have believed me?”

“No. You’re too good.”

“Thank you.”

Soon, she stood as he wrapped the towel around her head like a turban. “That feels so much better. Thank you.”

“I’m glad I could help. Shower, next.”

“You can’t give me a shower!” she protested, trying not to admit to herself how much she wanted to know if he was good at that as well.

“You can’t get your line for the IV wet. Let me show you the trick. Where’s your plastic wrap?”

“In that drawer,” she pointed, unsure what he was going to do with it.

“Aha! Good girl. I’m glad you have some of this,” he proclaimed. “It’s a secret weapon at the hospital. It seals to your skin as well as it does to a container. I’ll wrap this around your arm, and you can shower without having to hold your arm outside the spray.”

CC looked at the package in his hand. Her mother had recommended it highly last Thanksgiving and had given everyone in the family a roll. “That would definitely be easier.”

She tried to imagine how she was going to wrap it around her arm with only one hand. It wouldn’t be easy. He stood quietly, allowing her to process through all the difficulties in doing this by herself.

“You need my help. Come on, sweetheart.”

Following him down the hall, CC hated to ask him for more help, but she needed it. She tried to think of someone to call but couldn’t think of anyone she’d want to get naked in front of. Hunter was a doctor. She bet he’d seen so many bodies he wouldn’t even notice hers.

Stopping next to the bed, he dropped the wrap box on the mattress. “Let’s get this top off. Lift your arms.”

CC followed his instructions automatically and felt him safely pull the garment over her towel-wrapped head and her arms. He said nothing about the plain cotton bra Lark had brought to the hospital. Blessing her friend for guessing it was her most comfortable one, CC wished she’d chosen one a bit more alluring for him to look at. Quickly, he wrapped her hand and around her PICC line on her upper arm.
