Yeah, but that was different. That was before the play, the cuddle session, and all the other stuff that had me seeing him in a new way. “I guess I don’t get it? I mean, he’s hot and a good fuck, but we’re basically opposites.” Dane wasn’t the type of guy I thought I’d have a crush on. The kind of guy I wanted to fuck? Yes. The other stuff that was more than sex? Nope.

“Maybe that’s a good thing? Who wants to be with someone just like themselves?”

“Someone as cool as me?” I teased, making him chuckle. “He’s good with kids. You know I love that. Not because I’d want to have any of my own, but because I want to work with them.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“And he’s actually funny. And crazy-hot. And he got all controlling and dominating with me on the bar last night. You know how that gets me going.”

“So I’ve heard.” Seth’s ears turned pink.

“And you liked to listen, you pervy boy,” I joked, and he rolled his eyes.

“Seriously, this isn’t a big deal. See what happens. What can it hurt?”

He was right. It wasn’t like I was going to fall in love with the guy. I was sure the more time I spent with him, the more he would start to annoy me, and I’d move on. “Eh. We’ll see. I’m going to go do some homework. Thanks for listening.” I kissed his cheek and stood. I’d only taken a few steps when Seth cleared his throat. He nodded toward the blanket, which I grabbed and tossed into the washer before going to my room.

I absentmindedly did homework for a couple of hours. I had an essay to write and an exam to study for and math…which I fucking hated. Math would be the death of me. I bet Dane was good at math. He seemed the type.

Finally, I shoved my books away and went into the bathroom. I buzzed my blond hair again and took a shower, then put in new fake-diamond earrings.

Now what?

One peek out the window showed me it was raining. I sat at my vanity to do my makeup, and realized I was out of concealer, my liquid eyeliner was running low, and I was almost out of cotton-candy pink lip gloss, which was totally my fave.

One check of my bank balance told me I had no business buying new makeup, but I wanted it, wanted it so damn bad. It was the one thing I splurged on, the one thing I treated myself with. Why the hell shouldn’t I have it?

Without letting myself stress too much, I picked up my stupid phone and pressed Dane’s stupid name, because I was obviously stupidly crushing on him. God. He sucked.

His voice was all scratchy and sexy when he said, “Hello?”

“So…I’m almost out of makeup.”

He chuckled. “Okay…and you’re telling me this why?”

“And it’s raining.”

“Yep, I saw that. I’m still a little lost.”

“Because I don’t have a car, Dane! Hello? I’m hinting that I need to go to Sephora in the mall. I love the mall. I’m sure you hate it, but I bet Hailey loves it, and you have a car, and it’s raining, so I was thinking the two of you could pick me up in like half an hour or so. I could buy you lunch, and we can go makeup-shopping.”

“That’s what you were thinking, huh?”

“Yes. So I’ll see you soon?” It was much easier to make a joke out of this than anything else. I just hoped he went along with it.

“I hate the mall.”

“Yes, we went over that, remember? Or at least I did. But Hailey and I love it!”

“How do you know Hailey loves the mall? She’s four.”

“Because we’re kindred spirits, she and I. We get each other. So like, twenty-five minutes?”

Dane sighed, and I knew I had him. “What happened to thirty minutes?”

“You’ve been stalling for five of them. If you’d hurry and get your ass over here, we wouldn’t have that problem.”

That earned me a second sigh.

“You know it gets me hard when you do that, right? I love knowing I’m getting under your skin.”

“You’re crazy, do you know that?” He paused, then said, “We’ll be there in thirty minutes, but don’t forget we have to work tonight.”

I rolled my eyes. “Yes, Daddy. You do know it’s only noon, correct? We don’t have to work until tonight.” When I’d be singing in the Underground again, which meant I damn sure needed my makeup.

“I’m hanging up now,” he replied, and I grinned stupidly. Everything was stupid when it came to him—even me, apparently.

I clicked the phone and ended the call first. So there. I won.

I went outside when it was almost time for them to arrive. Dane and Hailey showed up right on time—twenty-five minutes after our chat, thank you very much.
