“They are going to go digging into your life,” I tell him. I feel protective of him even though I know he can take care of himself. Still, I don’t want anyone hurting him.

“Let them dig.” He kisses me again. “No secrets here.”

“No scandalous past lovers?” My gut clenches the second I realize what I blurted out.

“Not a one,” he says easily.

“Really?” My heart flutters.

“Dated when I was younger, but being an agent is a demanding job. Then I quit. Many might call me a shut-in now. I don’t leave my land much.”

“Cara?” I whisper and glance towards the front of the car where she’s sitting. We’re in the back of the limo, with Rye driving, but the partition is down. I don’t think they can hear me, but I’m not sure.

He chuckles. “She’s like a sister to me. She’s Sam’s sister; he’s my best friend. We all grew up together in Colorado. He sent her out here because he knew I’d work well with her and trust her.” Relief fills me. They never flirt or anything, but they talk and whisper and it makes me jealous. I know they’re probably talking about the stalker stuff, but I still wonder. He never even batted an eyelash at the other models that were on the set today, and I knew they tried to get his attention, said things about how hot he was, that they might try and hire him next. He actually looked annoyed with them.

“I’m sorry, I just…” I shrug.

“Jealous? Yeah, me too.” His arm around me tightens. I notice he does that a lot. I’m pretty sure it’s to reassure him. It does me, too. I love that he can’t get close enough to me. “Promise you have nothing to be jealous of. You own me.”

My heart flutters. Before I can respond, the limo comes to a stop, and Cara jumps out, coming to open the door. Jax starts to step out, but I grab his hand and draw his attention back to me.

“You own me, too.”

Chapter Ten

Jax

I take Mila’s hand, pulling her from the limo when all I want to do is slam the door and take her home after what she said to me. My heart is pounding and I’m not sure if it’s because of her admission or that fact that everyone is looking at us. Cameras are flashing and people are screaming her name. My protective instincts go into overdrive as I pull her into me and look around for any threats, knowing Cara and Rye are doing the same.

Mila wraps her own arm around my waist. She stills for a moment and I know she felt my gun but doesn't say anything. We walk, locked together, down a red carpet. “We have to pose.” She nods to where I see others stopping in front of a screen to pose. “I hate it, but the dress and shoes I’m wearing tonight are by a designer who donated a ton of money for the charity for me to show them off.” She keeps a smile pasted on her face the whole time as she talks. I can tell it’s not a real one. She’s doing it for the cameras that are still taking pictures of us.

“I’ll go anywhere you lead,” I tell her. I watch the forced smile become a real one.

“Who’s the guy, Mila?” someone yells.

“Does Kale know you brought a date?” another reporter yells.

I force down a growl at the mention of the prick Kale. I don’t know if he’s a prick, but the pictures and some of the things I’ve read about him make me think he is. We step up to the screen and pause to let the photographers get their shots.

“He’s my boyfriend,” Mila calls back before pulling me down and kissing me in front of everyone. I deepen the kiss for a moment. I can never get enough of her and I always want more. Catcalls ring out. More questions rain down on us as we stand there and take pictures. I hold her close. She doesn't answer any more questions but stops to say a few words about the charity before we move along and into the building.

“Sorry.” She tucks her hair behind her ear. “I know we haven't talked and I kinda blurted out you’re my boyfriend to the world—”

I cut her off, pulling her body flush to mine and looking down at her. “I’m more than your boyfriend,” I tell her. I don’t think I’ve been called a boy since I was twelve. Even then I was pretty big.

“Let’s go mingle for a little so we can head out.” I like that idea. Hopefully she likes mine, too, when she figures out where we’ll be heading out to later. When she told me she wanted to go to Colorado it made me think I had an even better chance of her not losing her shit when she finds out my plans when we leave here.
