Goddammit, my cock is hard, again. I shift in my chair. This is getting out of hand. I just dragged Raven into the shithole public bathroom not twenty-five minutes ago. I fucked her up against the door.

Epitome of class, Jett.

Shaking my head, I glance at my phone. Rachel. I hit decline. What the hell is she thinking calling me? She should know I’d be in court, or maybe not. Raven and I have been staying out late and getting up early… When’s the last time I actually sat and had a conversation with her?

Jesus Christ, I’m a dick.

I look over at my client. He’s a big star, but had an older client not asked me to represent him as a favor, I would have said no. It’s easy money, though. Cut and dry. A stupid actor getting caught with ecstasy, first offense.

Bobby leans over. “How much longer do you think? And with the community service stuff, can I pay someone to do it for me?”

I stare at him. Good thing he made it. He’s stupid.

“No, you can’t pay someone to do your community service, and if I were you, I’d stop laughing at your phone and focus on looking mournful.” He looks at me blankly, and I marvel at Hollywood. Only industry in the world where you can literally be an idiot and a drug abuser and get paid for it.

“She’s looking at us,” he whispers.

I glance up at Judge Anderson, clear my throat, and hiss, “Stand.” Smiling at her, I button my suit jacket.

“In the case between the People versus.…” I’m barely listening as she gives him thirty-two hours of community service and a fine of one-hundred-thousand dollars, which is actually pretty steep considering I pleaded it down to a misdemeanor.

“Good luck.” I nod at him.

“Is that it? I’m free?” He smiles and waves at the reporters.

“Yes, I’ll have one of my staff pay the fine and take care of everything. All you have to do is show up for community service and pay my bill.” I place my laptop and papers in my leather briefcase, then reach for Raven.

“You’re so cool.” She smiles as she slips her sunglasses on.

I can’t help but smirk. “Damn right, I am.” I grin at her and push the doors open.

“No comment.” I hold up my hand and smile at the paparazzi, but keep walking to the parking lot.

“Okay, so Rebecca just texted.” Raven reads from her phone. “You have a big day tomorrow and… my mom has called her three times.” She bites her lip when I open the door for her and she slides into my Ferrari.

I was in such a good mood this morning; I gave Iain the day off. Something tells me that may end tonight. Three calls. I walk around to the driver’s side, noticing Bobby exiting the courthouse with his bodyguard.

I should bill him extra for being stupid.

I sink into my seat and start my Ferrari. It purrs like a kitten, reminding me I should drive it more.

“Did your mother leave any messages?”

“No.” She stares out the window.

I press the button and instruct the car to call Rachel. It goes straight to voicemail.

“Call Rebecca.”

“Hello, Mr. Powers,” Rebecca answers on the first ring.

“Am I supposed to go anywhere tonight with Rachel?” I snap, then take a breath. It’s not her fault I’ve found myself in this situation. “I’m sorry, Becca.”

“Please, you’re the best boss ever. It looks like you’re open for tonight, but you had a dinner scheduled with the mayor and his wife last night and Rachel asked me to cancel it.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, she asked me to cancel it a couple of days ago.”

“Hmm, you can take off. I’m not coming back in today.” I disconnect the line and stay quiet as I drive. Maybe I should have Tina, one of my assistants, go to Tiffany’s or Cartier and get her something. Christ, that can’t be any more obvious that I’m fucking around. The funny thing is, Rachel doesn’t care if I have snatch on the side, but this isn’t that.

This is starting to be more, something that I’m not capable of having, especially when I’m getting married in less than five months.

“Has Rachel always been like this with you?” I glance over at her.

She sighs and keeps looking out the window. “I don’t talk about her, especially with you.” She rubs her forehead.

I nod. “Well, we’re beyond that, but I’m not going to force you.” My hands tighten on the steering wheel.

She shrugs. “Some women should not have children, and she’s one of them. Maria basically raised me.” Her voice is raspy with emotion. She’s been traumatized by both her parents, tossed around, neither of them really wanting her, though Rachel’s ex at least tried, and she had Maria. Guess the mystery as to why Rachel insisted on keeping Maria when she moved in is solved.
