These two women are the outside forces conspiring against me? You’ve got to be shitting me…

I turn so I can look between the two of them. “You’re the ones who bought all the baby stuff?”

Meredith grins at me. “And all the clothes, jewelry, and shoes in your closet. You do like them, don’t you? If not, I’m up for another shopping spree.”

“When are you not up for a shopping spree?” Beth asks.

Meredith nods at her. “True. You know… I do believe we skimped a bit on the accessories because of time.”

Beth quirks her lips to the side. “You did have to give her sunglasses….”

“Yes,” Meredith practically gushes. “We should go shopping tomorrow. There are so many things still needed.”

Beth shrugs. “I’m up for it.”

Meredith plots out loud, “And we should get the men to watch the children. The children will be too much of a distraction…”

Beth grins, flashing her teeth. “Yes, we should definitely do that.”

“Then we can grab some afternoon drinks and—” Meredith suddenly cuts off and comes to a complete stop.

“What’s wrong?” Beth asks as we both come to stop as well.

Meredith scowls. “I feel like I just walked through a damn spiderweb…” Twisting, she looks around, searching for something. “Oh no, he better not be!”

Beth shakes her head in disbelief, and I have absolutely no clue what is going on.

“That fucker,” Meredith mutters. “Let’s see if he takes the bait…”

Lifting her arm, Meredith sticks her middle finger in the air and waves it around.

A few seconds later, a phone starts ringing.

Turning back to her stroller, Meredith unzips her purse and digs out her phone. Hitting the big green connect button, she puts the call on speakerphone.

“Bait, princess?” a cold voice says.

“So you’re not only watching, you’re listening too?” Meredith snaps. “How dare you, Simon!”

“How dare I what?” Simon counters. “How dare I watch my wife and children and make sure they’re safe?”

“No. Don’t you even go there. You know that doesn’t apply here. We’re perfectly safe in this neighborhood. You and my brother have insisted on that!” Meredith says angrily.

“Be as that may—” Simon says.

Meredith cuts him off, not letting him finish. “We’re either safe or we’re not! Which is it?”

Simon exhales a sigh then he begrudgingly says, “You’re safe.”

Meredith throws her arm up. “Then why are you watching? You know the rules. When it’s girl time, you keep your nose out of it!”

“Maybe I just wanted to see you. Maybe I missed you…” Simon says.

Meredith makes a sound of disgust. “Don’t give me that crap. You see us every day. You saw us an hour ago. You’re just being nosy!”

When Simon doesn’t respond to that accusation, Meredith drops her voice to a hiss. “Did you bug the stroller?”

“Of course not,” Simon answers like he’s offended.

Meredith squats down and carefully examines her stroller. “Then where’s the bug?”

“What bug?” Simon says innocently.

“If you don’t tell me where the stupid thing is, I swear…” Meredith threatens.

Simon snickers. “You’ll what, princess?”

Meredith taps her lips thoughtfully then sticks her finger in the air. “I’ll invite all the children in the family over tomorrow for playdate.”

Swiping the call off the screen, she pulls open her messenger and starts to type something out.

Simon laughs, obviously not believing her.

Unperturbed, Meredith grins an evil little grin. “Can you imagine? All the children overrunning our house? We’ll have Adam, Charlie, Abigail, and Evie come over. I know you just love little Evie and her antics.”

Simon’s laughter cuts off.

Meredith’s face lights up as she goes on. “And just think of all the babies. David and Noah are on the move now. Who knows what they’ll get up to… And poor little Sarah has colic. She’ll probably cry the whole time. Then you have Rebekah and Abel… Making sure they’re not sticking everything in their mouth will be quite the challenge.”

Simon tries to cut in. “Princess—”

Meredith talks right over him. “Let’s not forget our dear nephew, Cian. You know Meghan has been complaining that he keeps blowing out his diapers. They’ve yet to find a brand that can contain him.”

“Princess—” Simon says louder.

But Meredith won’t be stopped. “I’ll make sure all the parents know they don’t have to stay. We’ll watch the little ones all day for them. After all, we know they need the break. And of course, we’ll take care of all the fun and cleanup. I should probably have the older ones do crafts to keep busy. Yes, crafts with paint and glue and glitter! Little kids love glitter, don’t they?”

“Meredith!” Simon shouts.

“Yes, dear?” Meredith says in mock surprise.

“The bug is in the right pocket of your diaper bag,” Simon growls.

“I knew it!” Meredith hisses right back.

Yanking her diaper bag out of the stroller basket, she shoves her hand into the pocket. A second later she pulls her hand out in triumph and straightens.

Dropping the small, black object on the ground, she starts to viciously stomp on it. “I swear, if I catch you spying on me again while I’m having girl time it will be your balls I’ll be stomping on!”
