“I can go get you guys food,” Jamie says. “It’s no problem.”

“Thank you. Can you bring it to his room when you get back?”

“What do you feel like?” she asks.

We both say “Chinese” at the same time.

Jamie’s eyes dance as her gaze flits from my face to Harley’s head buried in my chest. She leaves with a smile and wave.

“Come on. I’ll go check your room for you.”

He doesn’t let me go as we walk through the house and up the stairs to his room. It’s clear, as I suspected it would be, and when I let him in, he flops down on the bed.

“I’ll be back in a minute, okay?”

He sits up. “No. Can you stay? Like, stay, stay? All night? I know we haven’t done that, but—”

“I’ll stay.” I walk over to him and cup his cheek.

The kiss I’ve craved giving him all day is softer and more reassuring than I’d like, but he needs that right now.

I pull back. “I just have to go get fresh clothes from my room. These smell like the beach.”

He grips my shirt. “I like the way you smell.”

The desperate way he clings to me lets me know I need to somehow lighten the mood. This letter could be nothing. It could be a problem too, but I don’t want him to worry about it. I’ll take care of it.

“I’ll be two minutes tops. You can count … wait, can you count to one hundred twenty? I assume the highest a musician can go is eight.”

Finally, I get a laugh.

“Sixteen, actually. I’m giving you two minutes. If you’re not back by then, I will assume you’ve been kidnapped.”

“Please. No one can kidnap me. You’ve seen my guns.”

“How many guns do you own?”

“Not those guns. These.” I take my shirt off and flex.

Harley licks his lips. “Okay, now I don’t want you to leave for an entirely different reason.”

I’m glad I can cheer him up a little even if I’m barely holding it together myself. “I’ll be back in two minutes.”

As soon as I’m out his bedroom door, I take out my phone and hit Trav’s number.

“West.”

“Yeah, I’m gonna need you to tail someone.”

I wake with Harley’s head buried in my shoulder, my arm around him, and his leg thrown over my hip. I’m disappointed we didn’t start sleeping in the same room sooner because it’s an amazing way to start the day.

It’s tempting to wake him up because my cock is clearly not used to having a warm body to wake up to, but Harley took forever to get to sleep last night.

He didn’t want sex, but he clung to me all night like he couldn’t let go. As if my presence reminded him that he’s safe. I rubbed his back and held him tight until he finally drifted off. It would be mean to wake him now.

I want to do something for him though—create a distraction.

I don’t want him to have to worry about the stupid letter or Billy Webber and his delusions.

Slipping out of bed carefully so I don’t wake him, I slink out of his bedroom and text Jamie.

I’m gonna need you to pick something up for Harley.

What? she replies.

I send her my list, and she replies with the confused-looking emoji.

For Harley, I text.

It takes about an hour for her to get all the things I need and to come to the house, and I’m thankful Harley stays asleep the whole time.

When Jamie dumps all the stuff on the floor in the living room, she looks at me as if she’s awaiting an explanation.

I take one of the Nerf guns out of the packaging and shoot a foam bullet at her. It hits her square in the chest and falls to the floor.

She looks unimpressed.

“It’s fun. He needs that right now.”

She cracks a smile. “I like you for him.”

I shoot her again. “Thanks.”

“Quit it.”

“Are you gonna join us?” I pick up another gun and hold it out to her.

She doesn’t hesitate. “Heck yes.”

I arm myself with another gun and shove ammunition into my pockets.

“You’re really sweet for doing this for him.”

“Harley never gets to goof off. I figure I should give him that while I’m still working for him.”

She tilts her head. “You’re planning on leaving?”

She knows Harley and I are in more than a professional relationship, but we haven’t really decided what we are. I don’t think I have the right to get into it with his assistant when we don’t know ourselves.

“My contract still has a while left. After that, it’s up to Harley. Unless this Webber guy does something drastic, there isn’t really a need for me.”

I want to stay on longer than my initial six-month contract, but that’s not up to me.

“Ready to gang up on Harley?” I ask.

“I thought you said this was supposed to be fun for him?”
