“You’ll pay for this, Sterling, you and my asshole son!” He chooses those as his parting words. The man fucked up, big time. Now I’m going to have to do damage control, starting with helping Fawn, then calling Theo before he calls everyone else, Boston, Parker, and Ezra. They’ll come in, guns blazing, with their women right beside them. Minus Boston; he and Amelie are in New Orleans for the foreseeable future. That phone call is going to be a long one. I don’t move Fawn from where she’s burrowing into my chest until Wescott is in the elevator. He’s so pissed his approach didn’t go the way he wanted, his face is ruddy, anger permeating his entire being. Good. He has yet to see me angry, and when he does, it's going to be a fuck of a lot more dangerous than his yelling. As soon as the elevator door shuts, I’m dipping my head, kissing the crown of Fawn’s head, holding her tighter.

“He’s gone. I’m going to take a look at your wrist, put out a few fires, and then we’ll talk.” Doe doesn’t give me her eyes, only nods against me. Fucking hell. Nothing worth doing is easy. This time, the one person I was protecting is the one getting caught in the crosshairs, and that pisses me off.

“Motherfucking fuck,” I grunt out. We’re in my office, the door is shut and locked, and my cell is in a constant state of vibration. My only concern is the woman in front of me. Fawn cradled her wrist the short walk to where we are now. The alpha male in me wanted to carry his woman to where she currently sits, but the situation isn’t about myself; it’s about Fawn. “Can you use your good hand and answer Theo? I’m going to unwrap your bandage and see what the damage is.” I’m still trying to figure out how Wescott got around security. No one gets up to my floor unless they have an appointment or employee badge. Once Fawn is okay, my next step is figuring out how exactly that happened.

“Yeah, I don’t think he broke it, but the skin is definitely broken beneath the gauze. So much for being able to let it air out by the weekend.” She picks up my phone, answering it as another call comes through while I carefully peel the tape away.

“Hey, Theo, I’m putting you on speakerphone. We had a run-in with Governor Wescott, and I’m afraid Sly might be out for blood,” she attempts to make a light of the situation. My blood is still boiling, and when I see the shape her wrist is currently in, I have to take a deep breath to calm myself down.

“Wescott put his hands on Fawn. He’s escalating, which means I’m pressing the issue further. For now, I need Vanessa here, as soon as possible, or I’m taking her to the hospital. Given she had an appointment yesterday with one of Nessa’s doctor, I don’t think he’ll be apt to see her over the phone again.” The bandage is gone; in its wake is broken skin, much like Fawn stated. This time, we’ll be lucky if she’s not out of work for longer than one day.

“Son of a bitch. I’m on my way. I’ll call the rest. Boston and Amelie will be on the first flight out of New Orleans, too,” Theo says.

“Yes to the rest, no to Boston and Amelie. She’s pregnant. Wescott is pissed as it is. He’s already gone after one woman. Don’t think he won’t go after another. It’s bad enough Nessa might be seen coming into the building. Our only saving grace is you, Parker, and Ezra aren’t on his radar. Make shit happen. I’m going to make sure Fawn is okay, and then I’ve got to make another call. Wescott has no fucking idea who he’s up against.” My eyes meet Fawn’s. There are questions written all over her face, and I’ve got to answer them; there’s no other way about it.

“You got it. I’m already on my way out of the office. I’ll grab Ezra. Parker’s at home, so he’ll meet us there with Nessa.” Theo ends our conversation, not saying a single word after telling me what he’ll do. It’s just as well because I’ve got one more phone call to place.

“I know we’ve got more to talk about, but let me make a few more phone call, then we’ll talk after we figure out what’s going to happen next with your wrist.” She deserves a fuck of a lot more than waiting around and listening to the next phone call I’m going to have to make while not giving her the answer to the question burning in her eyes.

“Thanks.” I hit the end button on the phone that’s face up harder than necessary, trying to calm my shit before the next phone call.
